CKC was honored to be a part of the Taino heritage proclamation made by on behalf of the County.

Taino Arawak were the indigenous people Columbus met in 1492, thinking he had landed in India when it was really the Caribbean.

Although the Taino have faced tremendous hardship and discrimination, they have continued to survive through their strength and spirit *Arieto Yukayu Guayiga*

Curious about CKC’s namesake? Our friend Marta Martinez recently published an article in Silver Spring Downtown about Charlie Koiner’s legacy.

This article recounts the changing landscape of Montgomery County in the 20th century, Charlie’s determination to preserve an agricultural space, and the importance of Koiner Farm as the first urban farm in Maryland to be permanently preserved through a conservation easement dedicated to urban agriculture.

Thank you to immigration and environmental reporter Rosanne Skirble for highlighting the amazing work being done at Loiederman Farm in a recent article published in Maryland Matters!

Over the last month, Rosanne immersed herself in the Loiederman Farm Community, truly getting to know our staff, liaisons, interns, Farm Club members, vendors, and customers.

This article eloquently explains the ripple effects of community farming. In the words of our liaison Juanita, “This is creating a civic muscle for other things. It’s not just about food security, or it’s not just about can I grow a tomato. It’s going to help to improve the schools. It’s going to help mobilize resources to fix a road, all these different things.”

Meet Koa, our CKC puppy mascot 🐾 If you’ve ever visited the Thursday Market at Koiner Farm, you’ve probably said hello to Koa 🐶

Our neighbor Zach shared with us why Koiner Farm is so special to Koa:

“Koiner Farm has truly been Koa’s favorite place since we moved to Silver Spring. Even though she is 15 now and can’t always handle long walks, she still tries to steer us toward the farm every time we step outside. She has always been a people person. Now that she’s older it’s a little harder to tell that but I think part of her excitement for the farm comes from knowing there will be neighbors hanging out and enjoying the outdoors together.

While Koa definitely loves Lynn’s dog treats, a fun fact is that she also loves vegetables, especially the brassica family like cabbage and broccoli. For years, I’ve actually cooked vegetables for her alongside our own meals, and every time I shop at the farmstand, I’m really shopping for her as much as for the rest of the household. I think she honestly knows those bags are for her! You can often find her hanging out by the farmstand or farmers market tables, keeping a close eye out for any stray vegetable scraps that might fall.”

Turnips have a bad reputation, but salad turnips will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about this vegetable.

Spring is the best time for salad turnips. Since they prefer cool weather, they are sweet and juicy in the spring, and become sharper and more bitter in the hot summer.

Fresh, local salad turnips are so sweet and delicious that you can snack on them raw like an apple! You can also add them to salads, or roast them to bring out another layer of sweetness.

You can use every part of the turnip! Turnip greens can be used in place of mustard greens or collards, or you can add them to soups or stews.

Visit the Koiner Farmstand this Thursday, May 14th, from 5-7pm to purchase a bunch of fresh, locally-grown salad turnips!

Have a delicious turnip recipe to share with the CKC community? Send us your favorite seasonal produce recipes to be featured in our Weekly Farmstand Newsletter.

Subscribe to our Weekly Farmstand Newsletter to see what’s for sale every Thursday at Koiner Farm and every 1st and 3rd Wednesday at Loiederman Farm. Link in bio!

Yesterday evening was a wonderful night of community as we hosted both the Takoma Park/Silver Spring Co-Op spring members meeting AND the Department of Environmental Protection for our community compost workshop and to introduce our new Compost Manager.

We even had a surprise guest, as Joe Himali of came for a visit and we happily shared everything we know and love about our favorite little farm.

Thank you everyone for making such a memorable night!

The wind persists and so do we!

Yesterday was a busy and blustery day at the farm with our weekly market, our Thursday volunteer crew and lovely interns, the container garden workshop with Farm Manager Emily, and an impromptu concert by Maestro Zamora. Rain, shine, or stiff winds, there’s always something fun happening at the farm 🌱
