THIRD THURSDAY VENDOR HIGHLIGHT: Cheryl’s Kitchen 🐿️

Cheryl’s Kitchen started because she disliked the crazy shopping routine that goes on at Christmas time. She decided to stay home and make and send baked goods to friends and family. The little blue tins were filled with cake and cookies, and frosted nuts in the middle. After getting encouragement from folks that the nuts should be sold, she finally started the business. Cheryl has been vending at Koiner Farm for the past 5 years. The “nutty lady” is a neighborhood favorite!

Stop by Koiner Farm tonight, June 18, to support local craft and food vendors, including Cheryl’s Kitchen!

The word kohlrabi comes from the German words for cabbage (Kohl) and turnip (Rübe). Although the swollen stem looks like that of a turnip, the two are not closely related.

Kohlrabi is a cultivar of Brassica oleracea, or wild cabbage. A cultivar is a plant that people have cultivated by selecting desired traits. All the cultivars in the species Brassica oleracea were cultivated from wild cabbage with different traits selected. Kohlrabi, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussels sprouts, and collards all come from the same wild cabbage ancestor.

People have described kohlrabi as having the crisp and crunchy texture of an apple, with the taste of cabbage and a slightly peppery kick like a turnip. You can slice it up and eat it raw in a salad, use it in a coleslaw, or grill it, roast it, or steam it.

Visit the Koiner Market today, June 11th, 5-7pm, to purchase some fresh and local Kohlrabi!

It’s time for garlic scapes! 🧄

Garlic scapes are actually the stalk and flower of a garlic plant! Farmers usually harvest garlic scapes because it takes a lot of energy for a plant to make a flower and seeds, and we want that energy to go towards making a delicious bulb instead.

Garlic takes about 8-9 months to grow. We planted our garlic in November. Although the bulbs aren’t quite ready yet, the garlic scapes are a fun treat while we wait. They appear in late spring-early summer, and are ready to be harvested when they begin to curl. You can use garlic scapes in recipes the same way you use garlic bulbs!

Visit the Loiederman Market today, June 3rd, 5-7pm, to purchase a bunch of garlic scapes harvested at the farm this morning!
