Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced Tuesday that ICE agents arrested 2,197 immigrants across New York State from late July to late August. Mullin said that "Operation Rotten Apple" did what "sanctuary politicians" in New York City and New York State refuse to do: make the state safer. He noted that the operation received no help from Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gov. Kathy Hochul. On the same day, Gov. Hochul challenged the remarks, saying "we're not a sanctuary state for criminals." She said the administration is lying and withholding $87 million in counterterrorism funds owed to the state.

Lianyong Wei was found unresponsive during morning checks by a corrections officer at a detention facility in Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands — an unincorporated territory of the United States. Wei marks the 57th death of an immigrant detainee held in the care of the government since the start of President Trump's second term, according to ICE's detainee death notifications. Twenty-four of those deaths have occurred since Jan. 1, 2026.

The episode highlights what many immigrant rights advocates and immigration lawyers have warned about for years: When local police who aren't trained in the nuances of immigration law join forces with federal immigration enforcement through 287(g) agreements, it can lead to U.S. citizens being hassled, detained, and even deported. Morales is now back home in Austin, Texas, but remains fearful for himself and others like him. "Am I supposed to just accept that if I get pulled over again, it'll be the same thing? Will it be the same treatment?"

Yesterday, a federal judge temporarily blocked much of President Trump's latest executive order to deny citizenship to children born in the United States to noncitizen parents. While the decision was limited to children born after Feb. 19, 2025, including those born in the future, Judge Deborah L. Boardman wrote that the order would likely affect babies the Supreme Court had already defined as citizens. The ruling delivered a sharp rejection of the president's renewed efforts to restrict birthright citizenship, after the Supreme Court ruled in July that his more sweeping birthright citizenship executive order from 2025 was unconstitutional.

The ruling raised concerns that babies already defined as citizens by the Supreme Court could have their citizenship revoked under an order the president signed in August.

Connecticut leaders are calling out the Trump administration after more than 70 residents of Danbury were taken into custody during an ICE operation. Local leaders toured Danbury on Monday to speak with community members who say they have a sense of fear and anxiety as ICE ramps up activities in this diverse part of the state. Officials reported that people said they are afraid to go to work, the anxiety is impacting businesses, and there is a fear of taking children to school. "The administration promised it was going to go after the worst of the worst, that is, people with serious criminal records. That's not what's happening, not what's happening here where about 100 or more, perhaps many more, have been detained and only a fraction, perhaps six or seven, have any criminal history," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

But almost a year since they filed their petition, Irina's spousal green card application is all but stalled. Their situation is becoming a common experience for many as the Trump administration broadens restrictions for legal immigration pathways. Fewer petitions are being approved and they are taking longer than typical timelines — leaving couples and families in limbo.
