One Health Clinic

One Health Clinic The One Health Clinic provides side-by-side human and animal medical care for people facing homelessness or who are low-income.

The One Health Clinic is a place where people experiencing homelessness with companion animals can seek free medical and veterinary care at the same place and at the same time. It is a unique inter-professional program involving students and practitioners from veterinary medicine, human medicine, and social work with a goal of serving the health unity of a person and their pet. We estimate that th

ere are about 2,000 people experiencing homelessness with companion animals in our community. Pets provide emotional support and, in many cases, an inspiration for people to find a path out of homelessness. The One Health Clinic is successful because it leverages existing resources in the community for improved results. The partnership includes the Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, the University of Washington Center for One Health Research, Neighborcare Health and New Horizons. Together we are working together to better understand the barriers faced by people experiencing homelessness with pets and to create a replicable model of combined healthcare. Whew!!! What a weekend!! Can you imagine a day of collaboration leading to 154 beloved pets being spayed/neutered over two days?!?

———

In collaboration with our AMAZING family of free/low-cost veterinary care providers including Doney Coe Pet Clinic, Washington Health Outreach (WAHO) and the Collective (plus a ton of volunteers!!), the One Health Clinic (OHC) and team was able to provide spays and neuters to 154 beloved family members!

Special thanks to Anna from WAHO, Jess from the OHC, and three additional volunteers who helped transport ~43 pets to and from surgery for those families with transportation challenges!

Thanks to all the volunteers, veterinary team members and pet parents for making this event such a success. Additional thanks goes to Seattle Animal Foundation for making this event possible through a generous donation, as well as to the OHC’s The Street Dog Coalition family who helped both with providing supplies and with some staff volunteering for the day’s activities!
