Our Executive Director Dr. Soleil Boyd met with Senator Jamie Pedersen today to present him with his 2026 Champion for Children award!

We thank Senator Pedersen for his leadership as the primary sponsor of Senate Bill 6346, the Millionaires Tax, which passed during the 2026 legislative session. This landmark policy marked a powerful step toward correcting Washington’s deeply imbalanced tax system, where those with the least have long carried the heaviest burden. By asking Washington millionaires to contribute their fair share, the law created new opportunities to invest in what children and families need to thrive, like stable child care and early learning opportunities, accessible health coverage, and progress toward universal free school meals.

WA dropped to 17th in national rankings for overall child well-being according to the recently released 2026 KIDS COUNT® Data Book.

Despite performing above average overall, a worrying increase in the number of children without health insurance shows that Washington leaders must do more to protect access to health care for kids and families.
