We're so excited about the program lined up for our fall 2024 conference - here's some of what we have in store. Check out sernac.org for more details!
Earlybird registration for the SER North American Conference has been extended to midnight (PT) Aug 7…register now for best rates!! The Oct 28-Nov 1, 2024 gathering in Vancouver, BC takes place under the shadow of climate change. Field trips and workshops highlight responses that include enhancing resilience. https://sernac.org/registration/
Eric Balke, Senior Restoration Biologist with Ducks Unlimited Canada, will lead the field trip Tidal Marsh Restoration and Climate Adaptation in Boundary Bay and Sturgeon Bank. He says, “If the sediment enhancement pilot project at Sturgeon Bank is successful, we may be able to reverse the loss of over 160 ha of tidal marsh that’s occurred since the 1980s!” https://sernac.org/tidal-marsh-restoration-field-trip/
“The workshop Process and Practice: Leveraging Disturbance Regimes for the Management of Natural Resources will address public perceptions of natural disturbance, discuss design and outreach tools that can be integrated during project implementation, and embrace the understanding that engineered solutions are not always static, finished products,” says Michael Spina, Senior Landscape Architect at HDR. “Solutions often rely on dynamic ecosystem interactions and resiliency.”
Achieved through the collaboration of the Squamish Nation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and other levels of government, twenty years of restoration projects at the Squamish Estuary will be celebrated on the field trip Central Squamish Salmon Restoration: benefits include carbon sequestration, habitatenhancement, and resiliency to sea-level rise, storms, and floods. https://sernac.org/process-and-practice-leveraging-disturbance-regimes-for-the-management-of-natural-resources/
Another field trip at the Estuary, Ecological restoration at Iona Beach Regional Park: improving water quality, estuary health, resilience, and relationships in the Fraser River Estuary, will highlight how restoration is connecting people to nature while recognizing the deep history and cultural values of xʷməθkʷəyəm/Musqueam and integrating their values and interests.https://sernac.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Iona-Beach-Regional-Park-Field-Trip.docx.pdf
NATS Nursery Tour – BC’s Largest Native Plant Nursery will showcase native plant production from cleaning, storing, and processing seed to growing seedlings and container stock suited to diverse ecosystems. The tour includes a drive-by of Stanley Park where NATS has collaborated on post-windstorm restoration.https://sernac.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/NATS-Nursery-Tour.docx.pdf
