Evacuation orders are focused on humans and small animals but what do you do with livestock? While you always have the option to evacuate if it makes you more comfortable, often it is higher risk to your livestock than sheltering in place. Open spaces like dirt turnouts, round pens, arenas, parking areas or a nearby neighbor open space are all the best options. The fire will pass by and the smoke and heat is often temporary. Spraying down fire with hoses does help keep fire from spreading if people are not in harms way on open dirt. Fire does not burn dirt. If you have options where your horse can be kept in a decent sized dirt area, that is the safest practical option. If you must evacuate, evacuate to the closest open space like a large equestrian facility or a neighbor with an arena or round pen. Fires move fast and you can return to your barn quickly in most cases.
