Ms. Shirley joined our participatory defense meetings at the beginning of 2025 in support of her grandson Rodrigo, who is currently serving a life without parole sentence at Solano State Prison. Ms. Shirley and her daughter in law have been in full support of Rodrigo throughout his incarceration and through them, we have learned that Rodrigo found healing and a way to express himself through art. He started by sending drawings to his young daughter and a friend inside Solano offered to help him develop his skills. Now, Rodrigo makes all kinds of custom handcrafted art on cards, clocks, shoes, handbags, candles, cups and even a skateboard, which recently sold at an auction to support youth. His art is featured throughout this article, along with some words from him and his grandma - we are honored to share them with our De-Bug and Participatory Defense family! TODAY at 9AM - Join us outside the James McEntee Plaza, Santa Clara County Government Center (West 70 Hedding Street) where we will share other ways to support a struggling community besides incarceration and then give public comment after.

READ: The County Executive’s Office is asking the Board to sign off on a billion dollar installment of what the County Executive Offices says is a $3.5 billion dollar plan (we originally thought it was 2.5, but the County Exec today clarified the 8 phase plan is $3.5 billion!). The project is estimated to be worked on for 15 years - sealing the future generation into incarceration, and leaving the public in debt for years as we struggle to meet other needs such as housing, healthcare, education, and more. This will be an opportunity for the community to share other ways to invest funds that can keep people out of jails, rather than investing in incarceration.

The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors are voting at the August 25th Board of Supervisors meeting on whether or not they will invest 2.5 BILLION dollars on a new jail - making it the most expensive carceral facility in the country. Tell them No New Jail! Let the voters decide what our community will invest in!

Today we witnessed justice prevail in Yolo County! After serving close to 25 years, Maurice is finally coming home to his wife and family who have been fighting relentlessly for his freedom.

His case marks one of the first wins since the CA Supreme Court ruled on the Bankston case regarding the Racial Justice Act, where they ruled on the impact of animal imagery in court proceedings. Particularly today, the judge had to rule whether his case was considered “finaled or not” for purposes of remedies. Although his case was found to be “finaled”, the judge did not find that the DA had proven beyond a reasonable doubt that the violation found did not influence the jury in Maurice’s trial. Therefore, the judge resentenced Maurice to time served, acknowledging all the hard work and rehabilitation that has taken place, as well as to the community who is anxiously waiting his return home 💗

Today marks 11 years since the life of Richard “Harpo” Jacquez was taken by SJPD.
Since August 17, 2015, De-Bug has stood alongside Harpo’s family and friends through the ups and downs, the civil case, and the continued community work his daughter, Chandra, has carried forward in his memory.
Every year, one way Chandra honors her father is by hosting a backpack giveback for the children and community of De-Bug, a small but meaningful way to continue the spirit of giving and taking care of another that Harpo had.
This year, our Summer Youth Program kids helped put together school supplies for more than 35 children in the community. Seeing young people come together to give back to other kids is a beautiful full circle moment! ❤️
Thank you to everyone who helps, participates, and continues to remember Harpo’s life in a positive way. His memory continues to live through the community, through his family, and through the work of those carrying his legacy forward.
11 years later, we remember Harpo—and we continue to give back in his name. ✊🏽❤️

August 14, 2014, is the day Diana Showman’s life was taken by SJPD during a mental health crisis. Today marks 12 years since this horrific and senseless tragedy.

Over the years, Diana’s parents Jim & Vickie, have stood alongside countless other families who have experienced the unimaginable loss of a loved one at the hands of law enforcement. Together, they have turned their pain and trauma into a fight for change, to seek accountability and justice.

Diana’s father Jim, has worked tirelessly alongside other families for years—supporting one another through their trauma, meeting with elected officials, sharing powerful testimonies in Sacramento, and advocating for change. Jim’s dedication and determination helped pass AB 572, which is now law and protects future families when their loved one’s lives are taken by law enforcement.

To honor Diana, we continue a yearly tradition to watch a Baseball game—which Diana loved to play Softball! As her late mother Vickie is with her in heavens gate, we send much love to Jim and the family, living their legacy, celebrating their life and continuing to stand together with our community for change.

We love you, Jim. ❤️ We will always remember Diana & Vickie!
