Thank you to the Nichi Bei Foundation for featuring our beloved Shuei-Do Manju Shop!

Tom Kumamaru arrives at Shuei-Do Manju Shop in San Jose’s Japantown at 4:30 a.m. The confectionery shop co-owner of nearly 40 years begins to steam and mix the mochi in large cookers. His wife, Judy, arrives about an hour later to help.

“I love doing this because I like customers and stuff like that, and…my thing is, if I retire, I have nothing I would do,” Kumamaru said.
He added that the job “at least keeps my mind going and my body going.”
