Second Harvest of Silicon Valley

Second Harvest of Silicon Valley Our mission is to end hunger in our community.

Founded in 1974, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is one of the largest food banks in the nation and a trusted nonprofit leader in ending local hunger. The organization distributes nutritious groceries through a network of nearly 400 partners at drive-thru and walk-up sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Due to the prohibitively expensive cost of living in Silicon Valley, the economic

downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rise in inflation, Second Harvest is now serving an average of about 500,000 people every month. Second Harvest also connects people to federal nutrition programs and other food resources, and advocates for anti-hunger policies on the local, state and national levels. ๐Ÿ—๏ธ Our next chapter is taking shape in Alviso.

Don't miss your chance to become part of what we're building โ€” a future where we can meet the changing needs of our community for generations to come.

This new home belongs to all of us โ€” and together, we can make it possible.

Thanks to a generous $5,000,000 commitment from philanthropist and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, every gift to our capital campaign to build our new home will be TRIPLED through June 30.

Help nourish more neighbors.

For generations, the name Moses has been passed from father to son in Alviso โ€” a family tradition rooted in love. ๐Ÿ’•

Across the street from where we're building our new home, we met Moses Jr., who shared stories of growing up in this neighborhood and the generations of his family who have called this community home.

Today, like many families, Moses Jr. faces the challenges of rising costs in Silicon Valley. The food he receives from Second Harvest helps him and his sisters care for their aging parents together and keep nutritious food on the table.

What makes his story especially meaningful is how his father, Moses Sr., once served this same community. Today, that legacy continues through Moses Jr. and his own sons who are finding ways to give back and help others.

What fathers pass down isn't just a name. It's compassion, resilience, generosity and a commitment to showing up for family and community.

This , we're celebrating fathers and father figures like Moses Jr., whose love and guidance leave a lasting impact across generations.

๐ŸŽ If we can raise $12,500 for Father's Day, a generous anonymous donor will triple the amount. Make a difference for local families today: https://shfb.online/j3f

Last week, we were honored to welcome Katrina Rill, Chief of Staff for San Mateo County Supervisor Jackie Speier, to our food distribution at the College of San Mateo to see how we work with our community. ๐Ÿงก

Joined by our CEO Leslie Bacho, COO Tom Clark, CPO Shobana Gubbi, board members (Maria Poveromo, Brian Birtwistle, Judith Guerrero) and staff (Jenny Dang, Mirella Osuna, Cassie Konicek), we rolled up our sleeves together to help connect neighbors with nutritious food and experience the power of community in action.

The most meaningful part of the day was getting to know the people at the heart of our mission. Their stories and experiences remind us that this work is about more than food โ€” it's about building a stronger, more connected community.

Our partnership with Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is proof that when organizations come together with a shared vision, they can create meaningful impact far beyond what either could do alone.
Together, weโ€™re helping Second Harvest ensure that 1 in 6 people across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties can access nutritious food and the support every community deserves. Through Food For Families, Raleyโ€™s has helped make this possible by providing nearly 500,000 pounds (417,000 meals!) of food over the last three years alone, along with even more rescued directly from our stores.
Weโ€™re proud of what weโ€™ve built together โ€” and even more inspired by whatโ€™s still ahead. โœจ

Last summer, we broke ground on the site of our future home in Alviso and we haven't slowed down! Since then, we've celebrated milestone after milestone โ€” from topping out with the final beam to seeing the walls and roof take shape.

But this is about more than a building. Our new home will bring our operations together under one roof, create more space for volunteers and help us serve our community more efficiently for decades to come.

We invite you all to become part of the future we're building together โ€” a stronger, healthier, food-secure Silicon Valley.

Growing up in Castroville, Morgan experienced food insecurity firsthand and saw many neighbors facing similar challenges. Today, as our evening shift warehouse supervisor, Morgan brings empathy and a deep understanding of what many of our clients experience. He pours that care into every order, shipment and load, knowing how important access to food can be for families working to put food on the table.

HR Program Leader Ian Honmyo shares how community engagement and partnership is at the core of the Arista Way โ€“ a strong culture of giving back through volunteering, hands-on support and generous financial donations:

As of June 1st, changes to CalFresh eligibility will affect recipients who are designated as Able-Bodied Adults Without Dependents (ABAWDs).

Work requirements are now in effect for people who previously qualified for an exemption that has been changed or eliminated. This means they may now need to meet work, training or volunteer requirements to receive CalFresh for more than 3 months in a 3-year period.

If you currently receive CalFresh, this does ๐—ก๐—ข๐—ง mean your benefits will end on June 1. Your eligibility will be reviewed during your next recertification, and many people will continue to qualify for benefits.

Everyone deserves access to nutritious food, and CalFresh remains one of the most effective anti-hunger programs, helping neighbors purchase the foods that work best for their unique needs, cultures and preferences.

If you have questions about these changes, need help applying for CalFresh or want to find out whether you may qualify for an exemption, we're here to help. Call us at ๐Ÿญ-๐Ÿด๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ-๐Ÿต๐Ÿด๐Ÿฐ-๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿฏ.
