Second Harvest of Silicon Valley

Our mission is to end hunger in our community.

Founded in 1974, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is one of the largest food banks in the nation and a trusted nonprofit leader in ending local hunger. The organization distributes nutritious groceries through a network of nearly 400 partners at drive-thru and walk-up sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Due to the prohibitively expensive cost of living in Silicon Valley, the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rise in inflation, Second Harvest is now serving an average of about 500,000 people every month. Second Harvest also connects people to federal nutrition programs and other food resources, and advocates for anti-hunger policies on the local, state and national levels. 🩵 Six years later, the Hillsdale community continues to show up for one another.

What began as a commitment to support 25 families for a couple of months has grown into a lasting example of what’s possible when a community comes together.

Brett Stevenson was born and raised in the community where he now serves as Dean of Students at Hillsdale High School and Co-Executive Director of Empowerment Through Action. Over the years, he has seen the challenges facing local families grow as the cost of everyday essentials — from groceries and gas to rent and utilities — continues to rise.

With the dedication of the Hillsdale community and support from Second Harvest, the food distribution at Hillsdale High School now serves about 150 families.

That same spirit of connection extends across our community. Every gift helps make nutritious food available to neighbors throughout Silicon Valley and strengthens a community where we look out for one another.

This month, the Valhalla Foundation will match every gift, doubling the impact of your support.

✨ Jordan Silkowitz came to us with a vision: use her platform as a Bay Football Club goalkeeper to give back to the community she calls home.

From that vision, 𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗸𝘆 𝗦𝗮𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘆 was born. 🧡

Jordan’s connection to the Bay Area runs deep — a special place that means togetherness to her — and she wanted to turn that connection into action. Through her personal fundraiser, she's bringing people together to support Second Harvest and help ensure our neighbors have access to the food they need.

Our work is about so much more than food. It’s about people. It’s about dignity, hope and being there for someone when they need it most. 🫂💓

You may recognize Freska On The Air — or her voice — from local radio 96.5 KOIT San Francisco and Freska & Big Reid on 102.9 KBLX. Her story reminds us why Connoisseur Media's 𝗙𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗕𝗮𝘆 initiative and the work at Second Harvest matters so deeply.

Not too long ago, Freska was navigating an incredibly challenging chapter. She had just lost her job and, a week later, was diagnosed with breast cancer. At home, two young children were counting on her, while she cared for her own mother, who was facing Alzheimer’s.

In the middle of all that uncertainty, she wondered: “𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘮 𝘐 𝘨𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘧𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘮𝘺 𝘧𝘢𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘺?”

Second Harvest was there for Freska.

Today, she gives back and encourages others to do the same — a reminder that sometimes the person we help today may one day be the person helping someone else. 💚

Food insecurity is affecting families right here in Silicon Valley, where 1 in 6 of our neighbors turns to Second Harvest each month for access to nutritious food.

You don’t have to experience food insecurity firsthand to care about the people in our community who are navigating it. We all have a role to play in building a community where everyone has access to the food they need to thrive.
