Our mission is to end hunger in our community.

Founded in 1974, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley is one of the largest food banks in the nation and a trusted nonprofit leader in ending local hunger. The organization distributes nutritious groceries through a network of nearly 400 partners at drive-thru and walk-up sites across Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Due to the prohibitively expensive cost of living in Silicon Valley, the economic

downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the rise in inflation, Second Harvest is now serving an average of about 500,000 people every month. Second Harvest also connects people to federal nutrition programs and other food resources, and advocates for anti-hunger policies on the local, state and national levels. Some acts of kindness stay with us. Vicki made sure hers would keep giving. 🤍✨

We didn’t know Vicki had included Second Harvest in her will until her generous bequest arrived after her passing.

Food was central to her life: "She loved making it, eating it and sharing it," shared Deanna, her friend and trustee, who believes Vicki's choice to support Second Harvest came from personal experience.

As a college student, there were times when Vicki didn’t have enough to eat. Deanna would bring her boxes of day-old donuts from the shop where she worked — food that Vicki said helped keep her fed that summer.

Vicki never forgot what that kindness meant.

As a teacher, she opened her classroom early so students could eat. She shared vegetables from her garden with neighbors.

And now her gift will help provide food to our community for years to come.

🥛 Pour one out for the milk we never needed to throw away.

If you’ve ever tossed food just because it was past the “best by” date, you’re not alone.

“Best by,” “sell by” and “use by” can sound like hard deadlines for food safety — but they haven’t always been used consistently, and they’re often confusing. The result? Plenty of perfectly good food gets sent straight to the trash.

But California is starting to change that. 🌱
