With so many adoptable pets in need of homes, we're reducing adoption fees to just $15 for all adult dogs and cats (7 months or older) from June 26-28, thanks to our friends at Purina! Summer is our busiest season, and each adoption helps create space in our shelters for more animals with nowhere else to turn.

Every dollar doubled. Twice the impact for animals in need. That’s the magic of becoming an early supporter of Give Humane! There are just TWO days left to have your gift doubled before June 25, thanks to a generous $50,000 match from Charles and Carol Baum. Snowy plovers are one of the most vulnerable shorebirds on the west coast — fewer than 2,000 remain. When this bird was found with a swollen wound on their leg, they were brought to our Pilar & Chuck Bahde Wildlife Center. There, our wildlife veterinarians thoroughly cleaned the bird’s wound and performed radiographs to assess the injury. Luckily, there were no signs of infection, so we began pain medication and gave them a comfortable, warm place to recover.

With frequent monitoring, the bird healed well and progressed to an outdoor enclosure to practice flight. After spending 17 days in our care, the snowy plover’s strength returned, and they were released back to their native home.

🐶 If you need to bring in or reclaim a stray pet on July 4 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., please call 619-299-7012, press 1 and a staff member will come out to assist you. If you find a stray pet outside these hours, please visit sdhumane.org/services/lost-found-pets/.

Separation anxiety is one of the most common behavior challenges pet owners face. When dogs experience separation anxiety, they aren’t being "disobedient" or "acting out" — they’re experiencing fear and panic, and need support.

In the first episode of our new series, Ask a Trainer, we’re taking a closer look at separation anxiety, what it can look like and how we can help dogs build confidence gradually. Understanding the emotions behind these behaviors is the first step toward helping dogs feel safer and more secure when home alone.

Tattypoo's happy ending didn't happen all at once — it was built, moment by moment, by the people who opened their homes to her along the way.

Throughout her time with us, Tattypoo was fostered by nine different families (yes, you read that right, nine!). Each one gave her something she needed — a safe place to land, a chance to decompress, space to play and the comfort of being cared for while she waited for her new home.

Fostering didn't just give Tattypoo a break from shelter life — it helped her build confidence and allowed her personality to shine.

This National Foster a Pet Month, we're especially grateful to the foster families who make stories like hers possible. You help pets feel safe, seen and loved, and in doing so, you help them find their way home. Thank you!

July Fourth is just around the corner, and if your pet gets nervous around loud noises, now is the time to make a plan!

If your pet has a history of anxiety during fireworks, contact your veterinarian to discuss whether calming medications may help. There’s still time to ensure you have any medications on hand before the holiday arrives.
