Walks with a reactive dog can be challenging — not just for you, but for your pup too. The good news? Our Reactive Rover: Heel Work class can help! This course is designed to help dogs build focus, practice calm behaviors around triggers and improve loose-leash walking skills so you can enjoy more relaxed walks together. You’ll also learn how to encourage your dog to check in with you instead of reacting to distractions around them, and so much more!

This year marks our 11th annual Give Humane, and we need your support to make it one to remember. And to make it even more exciting, when you donate before June 25, your gift will be doubled up to $50,000 thanks to a generous match from Charles and Carol Baum.

By coming together, we can make a lifesaving impact for pets and wildlife in need. Give now at https://secure.sdhumane.org/site/Donation2?mfc_pref=T&df_id=27692&27692.donation=form1.

When it comes to love, there’s nothing like adopting a shelter pet. The bond you build is truly special — from daily walks to quiet moments at home, pets bring comfort, companionship and unconditional love. And that love goes a long way. Adopting doesn’t just change your life, it changes the world for your new best friend — and it creates space in the shelter for other animals in need!

Adopting a shelter pet isn't just one of the most compassionate choices you can make — it’s a smart financial decision, too. By adopting instead of shopping, you can save up to $6,000! Every pet adopted from us is spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated. And every adopter receives a voucher for a free vet exam at participating clinics, post-adoption training support and an adoption guarantee — meaning we’ll welcome the pet back if they’re not the right fit for any reason.

And next Saturday, June 6, the deal gets even better because all fees are waived for California Adopt-a-Pet Day! Ready to fall in love? With hundreds of pets waiting for their new families, we’re confident you’ll find an amazing match at one of our shelters. Swipe to meet just a few sweet faces who are ready to share their love with you.

Life can be unpredictable, and sudden changes can happen to anyone. If you are unable to keep your pet, we provide resources and tools you can use to place them directly with a new family while keeping them in the comfort of your home. Plus, adopters get the benefit of learning about an animal from the people who know them best!

With Home To Home or Rehome by Adopt-a-Pet, you can connect with potential adopters in your community and choose the one who best fits your animal's unique personality and needs.

It’s National Heat Awareness Day, and we’re sharing important reminders for pet owners on how to keep their animals safe during hot weather:

✅ Always provide plenty of cool, clean water for your animal.
✅ Leave your pets at home as much as possible. They'll be much more comfortable in your house than outside on hot pavement or riding in a hot car.
✅ If you must take your pet along for the ride, NEVER leave your pet alone in a parked vehicle.
✅ Paws can burn on hot pavement, even if your pet isn’t showing signs of discomfort. To be sure the pavement will be paw-friendly, place the back of your hand on the ground for at least seven seconds. If it's cool enough that you can comfortably keep your hand there, your pet is good to go!
✅ Avoid exercising your pet in hot, humid weather. Exercise your pet in the early morning or evening when it's cooler.

Thinking about adopting a pet but not quite ready to make it official? Our Adoption Trial Program gives you the chance to bring home an adult pet (7 months and older) for up to 14 days — so you can have some time to get to know each other before finalizing an adoption.

It can take time for pets to fully settle in and show their personalities, and this trial is an opportunity to get a feel for compatibility. It's a thoughtful way to ensure the match is right for both you and the animal!

Throughout the trial, we'll be here for any medical or behavioral support you need. If things go well, you’ll complete the adoption paperwork — and if it’s not the right fit, we’ll welcome the pet back with open arms! Learn more at https://sdhumane.org/adopt/adoption-process/ .
