Women PeaceMakers Program

Women PeaceMakers Program Uniting women peacebuilders from around the world to co-create peace research.

Four peacemakers are selected each year to participate in an eight-week residency at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice (IPJ), located on the University of San Diego campus in San Diego, California. The program pairs each peacemaker with a Peace Writer and a documentary film team to document her story and best practices. Selected candidates give presentations on their work both at the

IPJ and in the San Diego community and have opportunities to exchange ideas and approaches to peacemaking and justice, increasing their capacity to participate in conflict resolution and peacebuilding efforts and in post-conflict decision-making.

Yesterday we welcomed back former Women PeaceMakers Fellow Khurshid Bano to the University of San Diego! Khurshid was a Woman PeaceMaker with us in 2016. She credits the Fellowship with giving her the opportunity to connect with global peacebuilders, exchange experiences, and adapt innovative approaches to her community’s needs.

Khurshid is a dedicated peacebuilder, women’s rights advocate, and social activist from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. She has years of experience working on issues of women’s protection, gender equality, and community empowerment. Her work focuses on creating safe spaces for women, promoting social justice, and fostering a culture of peace through dialogue, awareness, and education.

We are grateful to Khurshid for visiting, and we look forward to welcoming her son as a University of San Diego: Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies student this fall!

For the 2025-2026 fellowship year, we will select three Fellows who are working to make border policy and the implementation of that policy less violent, using a gendered lens in their work or analysis.

Example topics might include policies that guide the management of border walls, family separation, detention, or deportation. This is not an exhaustive list, and other topics are welcome.

We particularly encourage peacebuilders from the San Diego-Tijuana area to apply.
