We are in week, which specifically honors the men and women who are currently serving in uniform. Armed Forces Day is this Saturday, May 16th.

We have compiled a list of upcoming events that are happening around San Diego to honor our military on the Veterans Navigation Center website. Most of the events are centered around Memorial Day later this month. You can see those events here: https://bit.ly/4djs77W

If active duty military members and their families are looking for activities and events surrounding Armed Forces Day, they should monitor the USO website: https://california.uso.org/events

If you know an active-duty member of our military, now would be a great time to thank them for their service. It is a stressful time for them due to global events.

🪖 Our veterans can suffer a moral injury when faced with the images of our country at war in the middle east again.

The feelings are complex, ranging from bringing trauma to the surface to causing survivor's guilt and, unfortunately, sometimes triggering the urge to self-medicate as a coping mechanism.

If the news and images are upsetting to you, it's recommended you minimize your exposure to them. It's also important to remember that you are not alone, and there are numerous resources available for veterans from the VA and other sources. For starters, the Veterans Crisis Line is (800) 273-8255.

You can read an article that one of the Founders of the VNC wrote about veterans being negatively affected by our country returning to war on California Business Journal here: https://calbizjournal.com/when-the-war-is-personal-what-veterans-are-feeling-right-now/

This is a very tough read. Veteran su***de has risen again for both men and women. Statistically, the cause can't be tied to combat trauma. It's veterans struggling with pain, isolation, disenfranchisement, and financial pressure.

One thing that stands out is that 61% weren't using VA care in their final year. They'd disengaged. We can't pull people out of holes—we have to keep them from falling in. Employment. Community. Connection. That's how we save lives. That's why we created the Veterans Navigation Center, which helps connect California veterans with resources.

Troops, veterans, and family members experiencing suicidal thoughts can call the 24-hour Su***de and Crisis Lifeline at 988 and dial 1, or text 838255.

If any vet is not in an immediate crisis and wants to get assistance with resources for housing, employment, mental health treatment, and accessing their benefits, they can visit https://veteransnavigationcenter.org/ and contact us by filling out a form or calling (858) 567-9191.
