💜 Puppy Parents Needed! 💜

Every Assistance Dog starts out as a puppy in a volunteer's home.

Paws for Purple Hearts is currently looking for Puppy Parents to help raise future Assistance Dogs for Veterans and Active-Duty Service Members in the San Diego area!

As a Puppy Parent, you'll help a puppy learn basic manners, build confidence, and experience the world around them - all while receiving support from our training team. Weekly classes are led by our very own trainer, Nicki, and Puppy Parents have access to ongoing guidance throughout the program.

One of the best parts of being a Puppy Parent is joining us for monthly group outings. There are plenty of local attractions and community events that help puppies gain valuable exposure while giving Puppy Parents a fun and rewarding experience along the way!

To become a Puppy Parent, you must be able to:

🐾 Raise a puppy in your home from approximately 8 weeks to 2 years of age
🐾 Attend at least one training class each week
🐾 Follow our training methods and household guidelines
🐾 Provide daily structure, consistency, and reinforcement at home
🐾 Be at least 18 years old

Today, we’re highlighting one of our volunteers from our San Diego site, Lori!

Lori supports our team through facility projects and hands-on site improvements. She helps maintain the space our staff and Service Dogs in Training rely on every day, making sure everything stays functional, safe, and ready for use.

The environment our dogs train in matters. Having a well-kept, organized space allows them to stay focused as they work through different stages of training. It also helps our team run sessions smoothly and consistently, which is key as dogs build and reinforce their skills over time.

Lori’s work sometimes happens behind the scenes, but it plays an important role in the bigger picture. The time and effort she puts in supports not just the day-to-day operations, but the long-term success of each dog as they prepare for placement.

Volunteers like Lori help keep everything moving forward and make it possible for us to continue providing our programs at no cost to the veterans we serve. Want to volunteer like Lori? Visit www.pawsforpurplehearts.org

Today, we are highlighting one of our volunteers from our Penngrove site, Sadie!

Sadie has been volunteering with us for about 8 months now, coming twice a week, every week after school, to groom all of our dogs. It’s important that we keep them nice and clean for our public outings. While our dogs do get baths weekly to biweekly, we always make sure they look their best! This consists of doing a head-to-tail check, brushing their coat and teeth, cleaning their ears, and getting in a quick mani-pedi.

“This has given me an amazing opportunity to work with the most friendly animals in the world! All the staff are so kind and supportive, and all the dogs are so adorable. It’s so rewarding to get to see them go to their new veteran and see how much they are going to help a person in need.”

Volunteers like Sadie help our dogs to become desensitized to touching their paws, ears, and bodies, making it a positive experience for them. Wanna learn more about us? Visit our website today at www.pawsforpurplehearts.org to learn more about getting involved and supporting our mission!

Today, we’re highlighting another one of our volunteers from our San Diego site, Amanda!

Amanda serves as a Puppy Parent to , opening her heart, home, and daily routine to support his development during the key stages of his training. What is a Puppy Parent? Puppy Parents help our dogs learn what everyday life looks like outside of a structured training environment, from household routines to new people and places.

With a background in the Navy and her current role as a Military and Family Life Counselor, Amanda brings a unique perspective to her volunteer work by bringing Ullrich on base! This gives him valuable exposure to active duty environments while building his confidence in real-world settings.

Volunteers like Amanda help shape the foundation for future Service Dogs through consistency, care, and real-life experiences. Want to be a Puppy Parent like her? Visit www.pawsforpurplehearts.org to get involved and support our mission!

Happy !

This week, we’re celebrating the impact our volunteers have in making our mission possible. Volunteers are at the heart of everything we do and contribute to the success of our Service Dogs in Training. The care our volunteers provide helps build confident and focused dogs that are prepared for real-world environments. It truly takes a team effort, and our volunteers are an essential part of that process every step of the way!

To kick things off, we’re highlighting one of our volunteers from our San Diego site, Phil!

Phil plays an important role in supporting our Service Dogs in Training through consistent, structured outings and basic handling. By guiding dogs to stay at his side, check in regularly, and remain focused on their handler, he helps reinforce the foundational behaviors they need to succeed in more advanced training. When Phil volunteers, he helps build confidence and strengthen communication to prepare each dog for the real-world environments they will one day navigate alongside a Veteran.

Volunteers like Phil create consistency in different environments, helping each dog generalize their skills and build reliability. This team effort ensures our dogs are well-prepared, adaptable for their important work ahead! Want to learn more? was full steam ahead at the Tecolote Road Trolley Station! He spent his time observing passing trains, new sounds, flashing lights, and the surrounding hustle & bustle!

Experiences like this are part of how our dogs build familiarity and confidence in busy settings. So if you ever see Nigel out and about, you can be confident that he’s prepared and ready for whatever comes his way. 💪
