We are celebrating a major win for San Diego's arts and culture community! 🎉

This week, the San Diego City Council approved a budget that restores a significant portion of proposed arts and culture funding through a collaborative public-private partnership, including support from the Prebys Foundation and County of San Diego. Mayor Todd Gloria has since signed the approved budget.

We are deeply grateful and proud to stand alongside the arts and culture organizations, artists, advocates, community members, philanthropic partners, and local elected leaders who spoke up, attended meetings, submitted comments, shared their stories, and demonstrated the vital role arts and culture play in our region.

Thank you to Arts & Culture SD and SD Art Matters for their leadership throughout this advocacy effort, and to everyone who made their voice heard in support of arts and culture. We are grateful to be part of a creative community that showed up, spoke out, and championed the importance of arts and culture throughout our region.

For more than four years, "El Más Allá" by Panca (she/her/ella) has been an important and beloved part of The New Children's Museum experience, creating moments of joy, imagination, and connection for countless children and families.

Following a recent assessment, the slide component of the installation was determined to have reached the end of its usable lifespan. Because the slide is such an integral part of the artwork, The New Children's Museum and Panca have been in ongoing conversation about the future of the installation.

Together, we have made the thoughtful decision to begin deinstalling "El Más Allá" starting July 21, and the slide will remain closed until it is fully removed.

We recognize that this news may feel bittersweet for many members of our community. As always, guest safety, thoughtful stewardship of our exhibitions, and respectful collaboration with artists remain central to our work. We are deeply grateful to Panca for her creativity, partnership, and the lasting impact "El Más Allá" has had on children and families since its installation in 2021.

As a contemporary art museum, we continually evolve our exhibitions and installations, creating opportunities for new artistic experiences while honoring the impact of the works that have shaped our community. We are grateful for all that "El Más Allá" has contributed to the Museum experience and look forward to the new opportunities for creativity, play, and discovery that lie ahead for our community.

✨ What an unforgettable evening. ✨

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Beyond the Canvas @ NCM, our annual fundraising event supporting The New Children's Museum's mission to spark creativity, exploration, and a sense of belonging through interactive art experiences.

Guests enjoyed an exclusive first look at Woodswoman: Earthseed by artist Saya Woolfalk (she/her), a thought-provoking and imaginative installation inspired by Octavia E. Butler's Earthseed philosophy. The evening featured a curated reception, immersive dining experience, and a special conversation with the artist, inviting us all to reflect on transformation, imagination, and the futures we can create together.

Events like this help ensure that more children and families can experience the power of art, creativity, and play. Support raised through the evening helps expand access to interactive art experiences, educational programs, and opportunities for young people to imagine, explore, and create. Together, we're helping build a more creative, connected, and inspired community.

Thank you for being part of this inspiring night and for helping us grow a more creative future for all. 🌱💛

Last week, the NCM team attended a special art exhibition at Through the Fold Book Store featuring student artwork created through our Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program. The exhibition showcased the creativity, reflection, and growth of participating 4th and 5th grade students from Grant TK-8 School. It was inspiring to see the thoughtfulness, creativity, and care reflected in each student's artwork.

This innovative program was developed as collaboration between NCM, San Diego Unified School District, an Art Therapist, and a panel of project advisors. This curriculum empowers educators to use visual arts as a tool for fostering social-emotional learning. If your school is interested in participating in this program, contact us at [email protected] to learn more!
