San Diego Underwater Photographic Society The San Diego Underwater Photographic Society is one of the earliest organizations ever to be dedicated to the art and science of underwater photography.

There will be a gathering for the passing of Mr. Elwyn Gates. The details are in the post.

I only met him twice in passing, but in those brief moments he was incredibly kind and offered encouraging words as I stepped into the role of SDUPS President. The photographic community will truly miss him. He helped so many bring the underwater world to the screen, and his influence will continue to ripple through the work of countless creators.

SDUPS April Meeting Announcement

Featuring Guest Presenters: Dr. Carmen Obied & Steven Lopez, MSc
Thursday, April 23, 2026 — 7:15 PM
Sumner Auditorium, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

The San Diego Underwater Photographic Society is proud to welcome Dr. Carmen Obied and Steven Lopez, MSc — award‑winning underwater cinematographers, maritime archaeologists, and co‑founders of Explorers Photography — as our featured presenters for the April meeting.

Carmen and Steven will be screening their short film “Stories of the Kelp,” featured at SDUFEX 2025, followed by an in‑depth presentation on their filmmaking process. Their work blends scientific diving, maritime archaeology, and cinematic storytelling to document fragile ecosystems, ancient shipwrecks, and the changing ocean environments from the Mediterranean to the Arctic, Antarctic, Amazon, and California’s kelp forests.

Their photography and research have been showcased through collaborations with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, Honor Frost Foundation, British Film Institute, British Museum, and more — along with recognitions from DPG, UN World Oceans Day, Shark Trust UK, Backscatter, and SDUFEX.

This is an exceptional opportunity for SDUPS members to learn from two leading voices in underwater cinematography and maritime archaeology. We look forward to seeing you there.
