Homelessness is rarely a single choice—it is most often the unexpected result of a sudden crisis or a tipping point after prolonged hardship.
No one grows up dreaming of experiencing homelessness, but life can change dramatically in the blink of an eye.
The pathways into homelessness are complex and varied:
Housing Shortages & Skyrocketing Rents: Leaving hardworking families with nowhere affordable to turn.
Sudden Job Loss or Financial Hardship: Turning an unexpected bill or medical expense into an overwhelming crisis.
Family Breakdown or Domestic Crisis: Forcing individuals and children into unsafe situations without a safety net.
Illness, Injury, or Mental Health Challenges: Impacting a person’s ability to work or maintain stable living conditions.
It is so important to recognize that most people who are unhoused did not end up there because of "laziness," a desire to "party," or addiction.
However, living on the streets or in crisis accommodation brings immense trauma and stress. As a direct result of becoming unhoused, some individuals become deeply vulnerable to using drugs or alcohol simply as a way to cope with severe hardship, fear, and pain.
Because every person’s journey and struggle is unique, the response to our unhoused community can never be a one-size-fits-all solution.
Understanding these realities is the first step toward replacing stigma with empathy, and building a compassionate, supportive community where no one has to face crisis alone.
