If you got a tree during the spring tree sale, you likely received a bag of upcycled mulch from our newest initiative!

Since spring 2025, Tree Trust has turned wood waste into more than 600 cubic yards of bulk mulch for landscape bed maintenance, tree plantings, and trail construction.

In March, we purchased a bagging machine to expand these operations and begin bagging mulch for distribution through our annual spring tree sales across the Twin Cities metro area.

Nineteen trainees have now gained hands-on experience with the equipment, building skills for future employment while deepening their understanding of the full tree-care cycle, from planting and pruning to making use of wood waste. 🌳

In 1991, Tree Trust initiated community outreach programs. To refocus Tree Trust efforts and legacy on urban trees, a new program, currently referred to as Community Forestry, was started. Through education and hands-on opportunities, Tree Trust began to offer citizens the chance to actively participate in the planning, planting, and maintenance of their trees, both on private and public lands. Education and hands on opportunities equipped people with the skills and knowledge to invest in their communities through urban forestry.

Denzel, a dedicated Tree Trust YouthBuild trainee, gained hands-on construction experience right in his own neighborhood at a local Habitat for Humanity - Twin Cities worksite. Living and attending school nearby, Denzel brought both pride and purpose to the project as he quietly installed stair risers, carefully blocked out the kitchen in preparation for cabinet installation, and more!

Building for quality, his work reflected growing technical skills and attention to detail, while also contributing directly to creating a safe, functional home for a future family. Through opportunities like this, Denzel is not only learning to build houses, but he’s also building a strong foundation for his future career. 🛠️

In 1983, Tree Trust began an adult employment program and hired full-time, permanent, staff after Hennepin County asked us to expand programming beyond youth to provide employment opportunities for economically disadvantaged and hard-to-employ adults aged 18-50. By offering a crew-based program year-round, rather than just in the summer, Tree Trust added permanent, year-round staff. The adult program ended in 1996 after serving more than 1,000 adults some years.

Residents in Golden Valley picked up their new trees ten days ago. The rain we've had is helpful, but be sure to check that your newly planted trees aren't drying out in between rains. 🚿

Did you know that in 1978, Tree Trust's summer youth built Minnesota's first floating boardwalk?

The City of St. Louis Park, Minnesota needed a 1,200-foot floating boardwalk built at Westwood Hills Nature Center. Tree Trust youth crews, guided by trained staff, built a high-quality boardwalk that allowed the public to better utilize the nature center, and a partnership was born that continues to this day.
