Miles for Meals Update: $8,107 raised!

Kay has already surpassed both of the goals that started this campaign: 4,000 miles ridden and $6,000 raised for Open Hands Midway. And she’s still going.

Executive Director Emerita, Kay, shares the latest about the Miles for Meals fundraiser:

“I continue to enjoy riding my bike and getting more miles for the ‘Miles for Meals Fundraiser’ at Open Hands Midway.

When I retired in June of this year after 12 amazing years as Executive Director at Open Hands Midway, I told the Board of Directors I would not stop riding my bike for this fundraiser because I want to continue to support the work and mission of the organization.

As I bike so much, I am using the miles I ride as a means of helping Open Hands Midway to raise awareness and secure funds to provide meals on a weekly basis. A goal has been set to raise $12,000, and I made a promise to ride 4,000 miles between May 1 and October 31 of this year. I have now ridden 4,000 miles of the planned 4,000 miles! The milestone was reached on Wednesday, September 23.

Recently I had the misfortune of getting a tack in my tire (see pictures) causing a flat tire. Once that was fixed I had some great rides that took me near the Como-Harriet StreetCar Line, Lake Harriet, and using the bike rail on the stairway from Mississippi River Blvd across the Highway 5 bridge over to Fort Snelling.

I also found a sign that describes me, TRAIL HEAD. I know that's not what the sign means but I am going to think it does, just sayin'... What a blessing it is to ride and to be doing it all for the 'Miles for Meals' fundraiser. Here are some pictures of the places I had the chance to see and enjoy. It is true, life is better on a bike, just sayin'..."

Since Kay wrote this update, Miles for Meals has reached $8,107. Earlier in the campaign, we floated $12,000 as a stretch goal, but with both of the original goals already surpassed, we’re giving this year’s fundraiser one final finish line: $10,000 by Saturday, October 17.

That leaves us just $1,893 to go! Help us close the gap over these final two weeks and send Kay across the finish line with $10,000 raised for meals at Open Hands Midway. Here's how you can contribute:

A “Miles for Meals” update from our Executive Director Emerita, Kay Kuehn!

“I have had a wonderful couple weeks riding my bike in support of the Open Hands Midway ‘Miles for Meals Fundraiser.’

After I retired in June of this year as Executive Director at Open Hands Midway, I did not retire from caring about the great work done through Open Hands Midway. I am passionate about supporting the work and that is why I am riding my bike, racking up miles,my way of helping Open Hands Midway raise awareness and secure funds to provide meals on a weekly basis. A goal has been set to raise $12,000, and I made a promise to ride 4,000 miles between May 1 an October 31 of this year. I have now ridden 3,755 miles of the planned 4,000 miles! I am pretty sure I can ride another 245 miles before October 31, just sayin’…

One recent ride, with my bike buddy, is the craziest story that I just have to share. It was to be a ride that took us from downtown St. Paul to South St. Paul, back to St. Paul, and on to the Big Rivers Trailhead in Mendota Heights where we were going to determine where the rest of our ride would take us. Let me relay the story, and know that while it may be long, it is amazing how much craziness we dealt with, just sayin’…

While biking to meet my friend for a recent ride, I get a text message saying “I have a flat FRONT tire and once I get it fixed I will meet you at Union Depot where we planned to start our ride from.” I say ok, I will see you there. Then I get an idea that if my friend comes to Union Depot we could work on changing the tire together and we agree to do that. A while later we meet at Union Depot and discover that there is no pumping apparatus attached to the bike fix-it station, only a hose. But that is ok cuz I’ve got a mini pump attached to my bike so we can use that to get some air in the tire until we find a place on our route that has another bike repair station.

The two of us proceed to repair the flat tire. The worst part is my mini pump has an issue and it’s taking FOREVER! Must be cuz I rarely use it and it is very hard to pump. Finally we get enough air in it and my friend can ride. We determine where the next place is that we’ll find a bike fix-it station as our ride is going to take us along the Mississippi River into Kaposia Park/ Landing so we decide that’s where we’ll put more air in the tire. Upon arriving at Kaposia Landing we discover that this bike repair stand has a hose and a pump but it has no end on the hose to attach to the bike valve stem! We determined that our next opportunity will be at the Trailhead near Highway 494 and the river trail. When we arrive at the 494 Trailhead we discover a fully operational bike pump to use! We inflate the tire and head off on our bikes to Swing Bridge Park. After a break we discover that my bike buddy now has a flat REAR tire!

Thankfully this park has a bike Fix-It station. My friend takes the cap off the valve stem and the inside valve stem of the tire tube comes out with it leaving it wide open and all the air comes out. But I say, “That’s ok, I have a spare tube in my bike bag, we’ll just put this on your tire.” I get the tube out and we discover it has a slit in it rendering it useless! We cannot believe this is really happening, but we keep our positive attitudes as we laugh about it all. My friend managed to get the inside stem reattached and we put some air in it.

Now happy we have solved the latest challenge we get ready to bike again. We stop on Harriet island for lunch and then plan to head to the Big Rivers Trailhead. We add some air to my friend’s tire and head out. As we ride it appears my friend’s tire is losing more air. We stop to pump it up and it goes completely flat again. We manage to get some air in it when my friend says, “I think I should just head back to St. Paul and find a bus or the train and go home.” We make our way to St. Paul via the Wabasha Street bridge. At the intersection of Kellogg and Wabasha my friend’s bike chain comes off. We simply cannot believe yet another thing has happened.

Unless the two of us were together nobody would believe that this story was real, just sayin’…

Amid the craziness it is a blessing to be doing it all for the ‘Miles for Meals’ fundraiser. Here are some pictures of the places I had the chance to see and enjoy. As I like to say, life is truly better on a bike, just sayin’…”
