Flying Pig Thrift is a popular Midway shopping destination with a mission that goes beyond resale at a good price, though customers will have no problem finding treasures at a bargain, too! We spoke with general manager Anne Tiller to learn about the business's history. Opened in 2019, the store honors the memory of founder and owner Melody Luepke’s sister Heather Valdez, an avid thifter who succumbed to pancreatic cancer at the age of 61.

Flying Pig honors Heather’s generous spirit by giving back to the community through donations to charitable organizations. Hamline Midway Coalition is grateful to be one of three current recipients of funding through Flying Pig, and proceeds also support Small Sums, which supports workers in securing jobs and long-term stability, and Moms Demand Action, which works to end gun violence.

Shoppers can find a wide range of gently used items, including crafting supplies, art, jewelry, housewares, clothing, and more. Local St Paul makers and artists sell their work on consignment, and Flying Pig is always looking for new local artists to partner with. Rotating discounts and new donations keep the inventory on the shelves fresh, so if you haven’t visited Flying Pig recently – or if you’re a new shopper – come on by to see what’s new.

Tomorrow: Join the Conversation on Reimagining North Snelling

In light of the tragic bus crash at Hamline University this week, many neighbors are feeling again how urgent it is to talk about safety, mobility, and the future of North Snelling Avenue.

North Snelling is more than a state highway — it one our neighborhood busiest streets. It connects our homes, schools, businesses, bus stops, parks, and gathering places. It also reflects major challenges around pedestrian safety, public health, public safety, economic disinvestment, environmental sustainability, and community-centered development.

For the last year, neighbors on the HMC Transportation Committee has been working to reimagine what North Snelling can and should be.

Tomorrow night, neighbors are invited to join an open conversation about short-term safety improvements, long-term transformation, and what it will take to make Snelling safer, more walkable, more connected, and a better resource for the whole community.

Local elected officials and representatives from MnDOT have been invited to join the conversation as well.
