The new chlorinator Cova installed in Raquel’s community is doing important work to make their water safe to drink. And while the ladder recently installed to reach it may seem trivial, it is doing no small part to make it all possible.

Before, reaching the top of the tank meant climbing a perfectly placed boulder and pulling yourself up by a tree branch every time maintenance was needed. It worked—if you were steady, strong, and a little fearless.

Raquel is. And she’s used to making things work. As a mother. As a water board member. But when making things work is replaced with making things right, something better happens instead.

Instead of improvising, there’s access.
Instead of risk, there’s routine.
Instead of constant challenge, consistency prevails.

Only a few days left of our spring campaign. Instead of waiting, donate now and be part of what happens instead! Visit https://covaagua.org/instead/ to make your gift by Friday, May 15.

Years ago, Rayna sat at her table writing out water receipts by hand, volunteering her time, helping keep things going when the system was still finding its footing. Today, her son Edouardo leads the water board.

The work looks different now. The systems are stronger, the water is safer and in collaboration with Cova, there are tools, and training, and support to keep it that way.

But some things haven’t changed. This Mother’s Day, we’re thinking about the ways that care carries forward from one generation to the next, from kitchen tables to community leadership.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers whose care helps build stronger, healthier communities one generation at a time.

Instead of uncertainty, mothers are building brighter, healthier futures.

When Gladys stepped into leadership, she inherited a system that had no savings to speak of. Instead of spending what little they had, she chose to protect it. She prioritized saving for emergencies, she asked questions, she learned as she went.

Together—with her team and with support from Cova—they’ve strengthened the system: improving water quality through chlorination, organizing finances, and building something the community can trust.

This spring, you can be part of that shift for another community. Because instead of uncertainty, there can be stability.

Instead of systems failing, there can be leadership.

Instead of starting from scratch, there can be something to build on.

In Honduras, rainfall is projected to decline by 20% by the end of the century, with water availability dropping by 41%. Climate change is increasing drought, deforestation and erosion that degrades the watersheds communities rely on. But through the partnership of Cova's sustainable water management practices, community members are working together to raise trees and plant new saplings to restore soil vital to the water sources they rely on. Climate change is impacting the rural communities where we work, degrading the landscape and threatening the quality and quantity of the water families rely on for their daily lives. At Cova, our work goes beyond safe water solutions to partner with communities to help restore soil and watersheds in support of sustainable water management, rooted in local knowledge. In Honduras, Cova Circuit Riders recently kicked off an incentive study to gather information to help us better understand what motivates communities to keep healthy chlorination habits. We’re looking forward to learning more about these motivating factors for our partner communities.
