Saving Our Legacy: African Americans for Smoke-Free Safe Places is proud to be recognized by Heluna Health as a 2026 Overcoming Challenges to Achieve Success Award winner! The honor recognizes SOL’s exceptional dedication and resilience in continuing to support and serve communities despite significant challenges.

When a $60,000 budget reduction threatened program efforts, The SOL Project did not stop. The team worked together to raise $14,000 in sponsorships, partnered with UC Davis to secure a research grant, and obtained a $100,000 Quit and Thrive award to continue advancing its mission.

Two of SOL’s five staff members, Valarie Scruggs, Project Director for Empowering Local Communities, and Anissa Adams, Community Engagement Coordinator for Advancing Momentum, traveled to Southern California to accept the award on behalf of the entire team at Heluna Health’s September 29 celebration in the City of Industry.

The recognition included a beautiful crystal award, certificate, and special gift bag.
This recognition reflects what can happen when challenges are met with resilience, partnership, creativity and an unwavering commitment to community.

Thank you Heluna Health for recognizing SOL!

Mark your calendars and join us! Stockton residents are invited to join Councilmember Mario Enríquez, The SOL Advancing Momentum Project, and community partners for a Community Town Hall on Wednesday, October 7.

Come learn about recent to***co retailer and smoke shop enforcement efforts, ask questions, and share what you are seeing and experiencing in your neighborhood.
The conversation will also look ahead to the Commercial To***co Endgame, a public health approach focused on moving beyond managing to***co-related problems one at a time and exploring a future that ultimately ends the sale and distribution of commercial to***co products. What could that future look like for Stockton? We want to hear from you.

Dinner is our treat! Join us beginning at 5:30 p.m., with the Town Hall from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Oak Park Senior Center. Don't miss out on this important conversation!

🎀 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! The SOL Project encourages our community to be proactive about health through screenings, healthy choices, and smoke-free environments. Secondhand and thirdhand smoke can expose families to harmful chemicals and increase health risks. 🚭 Protect your health, your home, and those you love.
