Office vacancy is over 30% in some California cities. Meanwhile the people who work downtown can’t afford to live there. Assemblymember breaks down how AB 2074 would change that by putting more housing near transit in LA, San Diego, San Francisco, Oakland, Sacramento, San Jose, and Long Beach, with faster approvals for projects that meet labor standards.

Yesterday advocates from across the state gathered in Sacramento to kick off YIMBY Lobby Day before heading out to meet their legislators and make the case for AB 1903, AB 1406, AB 2074, SB 1116, AB 1732, AB 2433, and AB 1740.

This is one of the most direct ways to shape housing policy in California, and the conversations yesterday are part of what helps move these bills forward.

These bills are moving through the legislature now, so follow along.

The median single family detached house in Los Angeles is over $940,000. The median condo? $650,000. That’s nearly $300,000 less, so why aren’t we building them?

Builders have walked away because a broken legal process made condos too risky to be worth it. And California’s housing crisis has gotten worse as a result.

AB 1903 (Wicks) is the fix. Watch this to understand why it matters.

Transit and housing work best when they work together.

West Hollywood City Councilmember Chelsea Byers was in Sacramento last week fighting to keep SB 79 strong, practical, and focused on helping communities across California grow around transit.

Local leaders showing up at the state level matters. This is how good policy gets made.

Why aren’t we stacking more homes on top of each other that people can buy?

Condos let people own a home without needing to buy the land under it. But builders have moved on, for a lot of reasons.

What’s the option for homeownership right now? Single family detached houses that you need to be a millionaire to afford.

Save this if and share it if you’re trying to understand why homeownership in California feels so out of reach.
