🎉 SB 973, the Wildfire County Coordinator Program Bill, has officially been signed into California law!

Since 2021, the Wildfire County Coordinator Program, launched and delivered by the California Fire Safe Council in partnership with CAL FIRE, has helped communities build the local capacity needed to advance wildfire resilience.

Now, SB 973 codifies the program into state law, securing and building on this model so Wildfire County Coordinators can continue bringing partners together, strengthening collaboration, and helping turn wildfire resilience strategies into local action.
So, what does that work look like on the ground?

In our new video, “Breaking Down Silos, Building Partnerships,” hear directly from Wildfire County Coordinators about how they connect agencies and community members, reduce duplication, identify gaps in communication and education, and bring local voices to the table.

🎉 SB 973, the Wildfire County Coordinator Program Bill, was signed into law yesterday by Gavin Newsom!

We are not only an enthusiastic co-sponsor of this critically important bill, but we are proud to have launched and delivered the in partnership with CAL FIRE. Since its inception in 2021, Wildfire County Coordinators have brought partners together, advanced wildfire mitigation projects, and built the capacity needed to move beyond the planning stage to tactical implementation.

SB 973, co-sponsored by our incredible partner Megafire Action, codifies the program into state law, securing and building upon the successful model that has helped turn statewide wildfire strategy into on-the-ground action.

🔥 For years, the Wildfire County Coordinator Program has advanced wildfire prevention, preparedness, mitigation, evacuation planning, fuels reduction, home hardening, defensible space, public education, and recovery planning. The program ensures wildfire investments translate into meaningful and uniquely tailored local impact.

The permanence and expansion of the Wildfire County Coordinator Program with the signing of SB 973 ensures that Californians continue to feel the program’s impacts and Wildfire County Coordinators can deliver more effective and robust wildfire mitigation, resilience, and preparedness initiatives across the state.

One step can spark a longer journey. 🔥

Through CFSC’s Edison International Home Hardening Grant Program, a Santa Barbara homeowner was able to continue his wildfire mitigation plan after receiving financial assistance for a new fire-resistant metal gate around his property.

That improvement helped motivate the homeowner to continue his home-hardening journey. Today, the property includes a metal roof, noncombustible siding, Class A-rated Ipe hardwood enclosed eaves, a steel garage designed to look like wood, and more than five feet of noncombustible materials surrounding the home. Through these efforts, the homeowner has maximized wildfire resilience outcomes while maintaining the home’s beauty and aesthetics.

The impact of home-hardening funding can go beyond a single project. Sometimes, one improvement is all it takes to build momentum toward a more wildfire-resilient home.

The San Benito Fire Safe Council is seeking a County Coordinator to support countywide wildfire mitigation, preparedness, and resilience efforts.

This full-time, 15-month position will work closely with local agencies, community organizations, residents, and wildfire resilience partners to advance strategic planning, public outreach, wildfire risk reduction initiatives, and community preparedness throughout San Benito County.

Big news for wildfire resilience in California!

The California Fire Safe Council is pleased to announce that an additional $8.3 million in funding will extend the Wildfire County Coordinator Program through October 2027, supporting existing Coordinators while expanding county-level wildfire resilience efforts across California.

Building on the success of the current program, this investment expands California’s statewide network of Wildfire County Coordinators in alignment with Senate Bill 973, strengthening local partnerships and advancing long-term wildfire resilience through greater countywide collaboration. As part of this expansion, we’re excited to welcome San Benito, San Bernardino, and Tuolumne Counties to the statewide network.

Since its launch, the Wildfire County Coordinator Program has helped:

🔥 Secure more than $104 million for local wildfire mitigation and preparedness projects.
🤝 Coordinate with more than 10,000 organizations to strengthen partnerships, break down silos, and maximize local resources.
👥 Engage more than 970,000 Californians through wildfire preparedness education and outreach.
🌲 Support the establishment of 100+ new Fire Safe Councils and Firewise USA® sites.
