One step can spark a longer journey. 🔥

Through CFSC’s Edison International Home Hardening Grant Program, a Santa Barbara homeowner was able to continue his wildfire mitigation plan after receiving financial assistance for a new fire-resistant metal gate around his property.

That improvement helped motivate the homeowner to continue his home-hardening journey. Today, the property includes a metal roof, noncombustible siding, Class A-rated Ipe hardwood enclosed eaves, a steel garage designed to look like wood, and more than five feet of noncombustible materials surrounding the home. Through these efforts, the homeowner has maximized wildfire resilience outcomes while maintaining the home’s beauty and aesthetics.

The impact of home-hardening funding can go beyond a single project. Sometimes, one improvement is all it takes to build momentum toward a more wildfire-resilient home.

Big news for wildfire resilience in California!

The California Fire Safe Council is pleased to announce that an additional $8.3 million in funding will extend the Wildfire County Coordinator Program through October 2027, supporting existing Coordinators while expanding county-level wildfire resilience efforts across California.

Building on the success of the current program, this investment expands California’s statewide network of Wildfire County Coordinators in alignment with Senate Bill 973, strengthening local partnerships and advancing long-term wildfire resilience through greater countywide collaboration. As part of this expansion, we’re excited to welcome San Benito, San Bernardino, and Tuolumne Counties to the statewide network.

Since its launch, the Wildfire County Coordinator Program has helped:

🔥 Secure more than $104 million for local wildfire mitigation and preparedness projects.
🤝 Coordinate with more than 10,000 organizations to strengthen partnerships, break down silos, and maximize local resources.
👥 Engage more than 970,000 Californians through wildfire preparedness education and outreach.
🌲 Support the establishment of 100+ new Fire Safe Councils and Firewise USA® sites.

The California Fire Safe Council is proud to welcome Janet Ruiz and Bob Roper to our Board of Directors.

Janet Ruiz, Director of Strategic Communication at the Insurance Information Institute (Triple-I), brings more than 30 years of experience in insurance, public affairs, and strategic communications. Her expertise in risk awareness, consumer education, and California's evolving insurance landscape will help strengthen CFSC's efforts to connect communities with the information and resources they need to reduce wildfire risk.

Bob Roper, CEO of the Western Fire Chiefs Association, brings more than 45 years of leadership in the fire service and wildfire management. A familiar face to the organization, Bob is returning to the CFSC Board of Directors after previously serving on the Board from 2018 to 2023, including as Vice Chair and Board Chair. His experience as Ventura County Fire Chief, Nevada State Forester, and a national leader in wildfire policy and preparedness will provide invaluable insight as CFSC continues advancing community-based wildfire mitigation and resilience initiatives throughout California.

Together, Janet and Bob add a powerful combination of expertise in communications, insurance, wildfire operations, policy, and preparedness. Their leadership will help support CFSC's mission to create safer, more fire-adapted communities across the state.

Meet Whitney Lecat, the Wildfire County Coordinator for Madera County 👋

Since 2021, , powered by a partnership between California Fire Safe Council and CAL FIRE, have been increasing community wildfire resilience by planning and advancing prevention, preparedness, mitigation, and recovery projects.

For Whitney, CAL FIRE outreach materials and partnerships have been essential to reaching both residents and visitors with wildfire preparedness information. Ready for Wildfire resources are a staple at outreach events and even shared with local Airbnb hosts to help educate visitors who may be unfamiliar with wildfire risk in the area 🔥
In a rural community where trust matters, collaboration with CAL FIRE has also helped strengthen local engagement. Having CAL FIRE staff present at events not only provides expert guidance but also reinforces a unified approach to wildfire preparedness, helping community members feel more
confident in the information they receive.
