How it started vs. how it's going! 💚 SEVEN years ago, Rachel (Big) and Sciyon (Little) began their journey together in our community based program. Over the years, Sciyon has grown in so many ways, blossoming into a confident, active young person who continues to discover new interests and embrace new opportunities. Their connection is an amazing example of what a mentoring relationship can look like!

Zoe’s story reminds us that courage can look different for everyone. 💚 Sometimes, it starts with finding someone who makes us feel safe enough to open up, take risks, and grow.

Our own Match of the Year, Ashley and Jazmin, embody that same spirit. ✨ Matched in November 2016, when Jazmin was just 7 years old, they’ve spent nearly a decade building a bond rooted in trust, encouragement, and showing up.

Over the years, Jazmin has found the courage to open up, share more of herself, and grow more confident in expressing who she is. And that courage has gone both ways. Through her relationship with Jazmin, Ashley has also grown more comfortable opening up and bringing that same level of connection into conversations with her own children.

Through mentorship, Bigs and Littles can discover new strengths in one another! We’re proud to celebrate Ashley and Jazmin, along with the BBBS community nationwide, as part of the partnership between Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles, and LAIKA Studios. With their upcoming film Wildwood, in theaters October 23, we’re excited to share stories that celebrate young people’s courage and resilience while highlighting how mentorship helps them unlock their potential and grow together! 🌟

Why are mustaches such great fundraisers?

This November, we’re teaming up with Mustaches for Kids Richmond for another growing season, and raising funds to make a difference in the lives of youth in our community through the power of mentorship!

Can you join us as a “Grower?” Here’s what you’ll do:

🌟 Grow: Sign up as a “Grower” on our BBBS team and grow a mustache for four weeks (a fake green ‘stache counts too!)

💚 Rally: Share your updates and encourage your friends, family, and coworkers to raise money for local kids.

🎉 Have fun: Join events, meetups, and the M4K Richmond community along the way. The fun lasts from Nov. 4 - Dec. 4!

Big, Aniya, a Batten University student, is excited to be paired with Little, Aurora. From crafting to playing games, these two are already looking forward to making memories, sharing laughs, and building a meaningful connection.✨

It’s officially launched! 🎉 Our new site-based mentorship program is now on the campus of Batten University, where we’ll have mentoring take place for local elementary and middle school students from Tidewater Collegiate Academy.

Now, college students in Hampton Roads can mentor local youth conveniently on campus, making it easier than ever to show up, build a meaningful connection, and make a difference in a young person’s life. 💚

We recently had a wonderful time hosting our Mentorship 101 Workshop in collaboration with Batten University, bringing local college students together to learn about the power of mentoring. And now we’re excited to put those learnings into action on campus! A BIG thank you to Batten University, our Program Manager Sylvia, and the 10 local college students who have already signed up to be part of this new program.

Matches taking on the NAS Oceana Air Show! 💚✈️ Recently, some of our Hampton Roads Bigs and Littles got to enjoy time together, make new friends, and explore interests at the Oceana Air Show in Virginia Beach.

For military-connected youth, life can mean moving often, starting over, and having to find your place in a new community all over again. That’s why having a mentor in your corner matters! A Big can be a familiar face in an unfamiliar place, help them explore interests in a new area, and remind a child that they belong.

A BIG thank you to our Big, Greg, who helps with running the air show and shared tickets so his fellow Bigs and Littles could enjoy the day together. Because of his support our matches enjoyed the following fun that day:

✈️ Getting up close to military aircraft with displays throughout the show
💙 Watching the U.S. Navy Blue Angels take to the skies
🧪 Exploring STEM activities designed to spark curiosity around aviation, science and engineering
🐤 Meeting Mama Duck, the World’s Largest Rubber Duck
🛩️ Seeing incredible aerial demonstrations featuring military and civilian aircraft
🚗 Checking out cool cars alongside the aircraft displays
🎪 Enjoying family-friendly activities, food and entertainment throughout the event

From unforgettable experiences to everyday moments, we’re grateful to serve Hampton Roads and military-connected families through mentorship. 💚

October is a BIG month for match anniversaries at Big Brothers Big Sisters! 🎉 We’re celebrating the Bigs and Littles who continue to show up for each other, make memories, and build relationships that grow stronger with time.

One of those matches is especially close to home: our Director of Programs, Maggie, and her Little, Olivia! Maggie helps drive the mission forward every day, but she’s also living that mission through her own relationship with Olivia.💚
