Food banks can help put food on a family’s dinner table. But we can’t replace the purchasing power of .

Feed More, and our partner food pantry Moments of Hope Outreach, were featured in last night's PBS NewsHour report on recent federal changes to the Supplemental Food Assistance Program (SNAP).

Like many other Feeding America member food banks, we're seeing more neighbors turn to local food pantries for help as cuts to this essential federal assistance program force families to choose between food, rent, medication and other necessities. In fact, we've seen visits to our partner food panties rise by 20% so far this year alone.

Joan, a neighbor who gets help from Moments of Hope, knows this all too well: a $200 reduction in her monthly SNAP benefits has made it harder to afford healthy food for herself and two young children at home. The team at Moments of Hope help her fill that gap.

Through partnerships with healthcare providers like VCU Health Community Memorial Hospital in South Hill, we’re helping neighbors access nutritious food and ongoing support to manage chronic health conditions, reduce barriers to healthy eating and help them feel their best.

As costs rise and eligibility for federal food assistance programs tightens, more Central Virginia neighbors are struggling to make ends meet.

Across our network, visits to our partner food pantries and nonprofits are up 20.6% compared to last year, with more than 1.5 million visits from neighbors seeking food assistance so far this year alone. Even more striking, about 27% of those visits came from neighbors accessing our network for the very first time.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch explores how Feed More and our partners are navigating this growing need and what it looks like on the ground at two local pantries: St. Thomas Episcopal Church and Ginter Park UMC.

Feed More welcomed local Divine Nine Alumni Chapter members for an evening filled with food, music, fun and fellowship - and to kick off something bigger. With a long history of community service and leadership, Divine Nine fraternities and sororities are a natural partner in our mission to nourish neighbors in need!

Next up: the inaugural Feed More Divine Nine Challenge! In January and February 2027, Central Virginia Divine Nine Alumni Chapters will compete to make the greatest impact for our neighbors in need by donating food, funds and volunteer time!

How much do you know about SNAP? 👀

October is month at Feed More, and we’re clearing up a few common misconceptions around the program.

Because knowing how the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) works can help us recognize when it may be a resource for someone in our community.

🤔Myth: You have to be unemployed to receive SNAP.
💡Reality: Having a job doesn’t mean you’re automatically ineligible for SNAP. Eligibility depends on household circumstances and current program requirements.

🤔Myth: You have to have kids to receive SNAP.
💡Reality: SNAP can support eligible households with or without children.

🤔Myth: If you already use a food pantry, you don’t need SNAP.
💡Reality: SNAP and pantries can work together. SNAP can help stretch a household's grocery budget, while food assistance fills the gaps.

🤔Myth: Needing SNAP means you did something wrong.
💡Reality: Sometimes, household resources simply don’t stretch far enough. SNAP is one resource that can help eligible households put food on the table.
