Day 3 of our countdown to Thank a Farmer Day (which is today, hooray!) and our simultaneous celebration of International Year of the Woman Farmer brings us to of : 🐂🐔🎃

Cheyenne Rhodes, owner of family farm Sycamore Banks located in Mt. Jackson, Virginia, farms poultry and cattle alongside her husband and three kids. The family focuses on agritourism each fall season as they are the only pick your own pumpkin patch in Shenandoah County.

Hosting on farm dinners and events to bridge the farm to table gap for their community is a cause Cheyenne is heavily invested in, and passionate about!

Cheyenne says, "I love raising my kids on a farm and watching them make connections every day about real life and agriculture, watching their passion for the farm develop and grow while also learning the hard truths.

Agriculture literacy, for both kids and adults, is my biggest passion and I love connecting the dots for our farm visitors and guests. I have always believed that if we don't tell our story, it will be told by someone else and it likely won't be the right story." 📖🌱✨

Day 2 brings us to of Henrico County...

"Hi! I’m Cappie Montgomery, and I live in Eastern Henrico, Virginia, with my husband, John. In 2018, we took our love of farming, good food, and community and turned it into the . I’ve been the market manager ever since, and I still get a kick out of watching our Saturday morning market come to life each week. 🍓🫐🥔🥕🥖🥗
Dorey Park Farmers Market is a nonprofit with a pretty simple goal: make good, fresh food accessible to more people and help our community feel more connected to where that food comes from and to each other. We want people to meet the farmers who grow their food, make new friends, learn a little about our local food system, and have fun doing it.
At DPFM, you’ll find a little bit of everything: fresh produce, meats, eggs, baked goods, prepared foods, and handcrafted items. We host family days and a series of themed events throughout the season, including Community Health Day, Conservation Day, and Teacher Appreciation Day. Every week, we feature some of RVA’s best local musicians, and our POP Children’s Club keeps the little ones busy with a fun craft and a chance to taste our “veggie of the week.” 🌽🍅🥒
When I’m not managing the market, John and I are busy running Fleur-de-lis Farms, our 16-acre family farm right here in Eastern Henrico. We grow vegetables, raise pigs, care for a large flock of laying hens, and tend a small fig orchard. Our farm is Certified Naturally Grown, so we use sustainable, organic growing practices that are good for the soil, the land, and the food we grow.
And then there’s the cheese and butter! I make cultured butters in a variety of seasonal flavors, along with fresh cow’s milk cheese using cream and milk from
in Dinwiddie. 🐄🥛🧈🐖🐔🥚🌱
For me, the best part of all of this is getting to grow, raise, and make food, and then take it to the market to share it with our community. I love the market - the conversations, the familiar faces, the new friendships, and seeing people get excited about good local food. There’s just something pretty special about Saturday morning at the farmers market." ✨

We are counting down the time to THANK A FARMER day while continuing to celebrate the International Year of the Woman Farmer. Over the next few days, we’d like to introduce you to a few female farmers in Virginia. 👩‍🌾

Please meet CLAUDIA— AZALEA FIELD FL✿WERS | RAPIDAN, VA owner and farmer, Claudia Vasquez! 💐 ✨

“I’m a flower farmer and owner of Azalea Field Flowers in Rapidan, Virginia, in Culpeper County. I grow seasonal cut flowers that I sell through our local farmers market, weddings and events, floral deliveries, bloom buckets, and other community events throughout the season.

What I love most about farming is being able to grow something from a tiny seed and eventually watch it become part of someone else’s life, whether that’s a wedding bouquet, flowers for someone going through a hard time, or simply a handwrap someone picked up at the farmers market. I also love being able to show my children what it looks like to build something with your own hands and to be part of our local agricultural community!”
