The Wood County Arboretum and Botanical Gardens is an all-volunteer public garden located in Quitman Texas. It consists of 23 acres of gardens, walking trails, woodlands, benches, and garden art, and features the historic Stinson House, built in 1869 and moved to its current location about 100 years later. The Arboretum was founded by Pam Riley in 2007, as a project for her Texas Master Gardener internship. Pam’s vision grew, and she formed a non-profit organization, Friends of the Arboretum, to manage the property that is leased from the city of Quitman. Since its inception, the Arboretum and the Texas Master Gardeners - Wood County - have had a close working relationship under multiple agents. While the relationship was suspended during the pandemic, we are thrilled to once again partner with the Texas Master Gardeners in Wood County! The Arboretum receives no funding from the city, county, state, or federal government. All funds to maintain the house and improve and maintain the gardens are raised by volunteers, with the support of businesses and individuals throughout the county. We also hold fund-raising events such as plant sales, rentals, and gift shop purchases. Local businesses help Volunteers from around the area - nature lovers, gardeners, church youths, scouts, and others - keep the gardens and trails looking at their best year-round. The gardens and trails are open to the public free of charge from dawn till dusk, and the house is available for viewing when volunteers are working - generally Wednesday mornings from 9 till noon - and by appointment.

There are plenty of places to sit in the shade at the Arboretum. And with the weather getting now cooler it is quite pleasant to commune with nature.

Shout out to The East Texas Weekend on KLTV Tyler for including the Wood County Arboretum in this fall commercial. If you see a big foot--it's at the Arboretum!

Some plants seemed to take this summer's heat in stride. Others have struggled but are bouncing back a bit. Abelias, ruellias and firespike seem to be doing well(unless irrigation was lacking). But hydrangeas and elephant leaves (alocacia/calocacia) have struggled, unless they were well watered and totally in shade.
