The Stormwater Innovation Center joined the Southeast New England Program (SNEP), EPA New England, Senator Jack Reed, Representatives Seth Magaziner and Gabe Amo, Cranston Mayor Ken Hopkins, and regional partners to celebrate $2.3 million in environmental restoration grants and technical assistance across Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts.

The funding includes $1.2 million for six Rhode Island organizations through SNEP Watershed Implementation Grants and $78,000 for 11 organizations through Restoration Capital Mini-Grants.

The Stormwater Innovation Center’s mini-grant will support the purchase of new bacteria-testing equipment and supplies, allowing our team to conduct water-quality testing more efficiently. This will help reduce the time and logistical challenges associated with sample processing, expand our capacity to monitor bacteria levels in Roger Williams Park and the surrounding watershed, and provide timely information to help identify contamination sources and protect public health.

Funded by EPA New England and administered in partnership with Restore America’s Estuaries, these grant programs strengthen local efforts to restore clean water, protect ecosystems, and build more resilient communities.

We’re grateful to SNEP and our regional partners for investing in the tools and collaboration needed to help protect our watersheds.

It’s Walktober at Roger Williams Park! You can win prizes just by walking in the park this month, and The Stormwater Innovation Center has three walks you can join in on to get some milage!

How do the prizes work? Keep track of your steps using Strava or another tracking method of your choice and win a prize for completing 6, 13.1, and 26.2 miles during the month of October. Send a photo of your route and mileage to [email protected] to qualify. Prizes include free tickets to the RWP Botanical Center, Zoo Holiday Lights, a seasonal Family Skating pass at the Providence Rink, and park swag.

We will continue to update as other monthly walks pop up from our partners as well! Roger Williams Park Conservancy and Museum of Natural History and Planetarium have some great ones planned as well.

Yesterday, the Stormwater Innovation Center hosted another stormwater site tour in Roger Williams Park for local Rhode Island planning board officials.

Planning board members are required to complete an online training developed by URI NEMO in partnership with the Rhode Island Division of Statewide Planning. Through our partnership with URI NEMO, we offer this tour as an additional in-person training opportunity that reinforces the online material through field-based learning. Participants visit stormwater sites, hear lessons learned about design, construction, and maintenance, and learn what to look for when reviewing stormwater plans for new developments. The fall Building Green Futures cohort was in Roger Williams Park today, gaining hands-on experience in stormwater inspection, maintenance, and construction while working hard to remove sediment and keep the Park’s stormwater systems functioning effectively. Providence Parks Department
