After 3 years we are excited to announce that the Stormwater Zoo Masterplan has been finalized, developed in collaboration with the Roger Williams Park Zoo, the Audubon Society of Rhode Island, Horsley Witten Group, the University of Rhode Island, the City of Providence, and the Providence Parks Department!

This comprehensive plan will serve as a roadmap for the Zoo, SIC, and project partners to guide future stormwater planning, design, implementation, maintenance, and monitoring efforts that will improve water quality in the Zoo Pond and the Roger Williams Park pond system.

This project was made possible through a 2023 Environmental Protection Agency Southeast New England Program (SNEP) Watershed Implementation Grant through a partnership with Restore America's Estuaries.

A representative from Contech Engineered Solutions will discuss how the StormFilter works, sizing considerations, design limitations, maintenance, and best practices. Staff from Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management will also provide an overview of the certification process for proprietary stormwater treatment devices in Rhode Island.

This webinar will be valuable for designers, reviewers, consultants, and municipalities interested in meeting water quality goals and TMDL requirements on challenging sites.

Over the past few days, the Stormwater Innovation Center has been working with Building Futures and its Building Green Futures program to introduce the spring student cohort to stormwater management, maintenance, and site inspection practices. Through both classroom and field-based learning, students explored how green infrastructure sites function and how to identify wet- and dry-weather indicators that help determine whether a site needs routine maintenance or more substantial repair or reconstruction. The students also gained hands-on experience managing invasive plants in the rain garden at the carousel project, while building practical skills and learning about career pathways in the stormwater and green infrastructure fields. Welcome Lillie Tomlinson, our new Water Resources Monitoring Technician!! πŸ’§πŸ’§

Lillie comes to us with a strong background in freshwater ecology, with specific emphases on water quality monitoring and algal ecology. Originally from Hood River, OR, she fell into the water quality world while pursuing her BS in Environmental Science at Western Washington University.

After graduating, she headed to New York, where she served as a laboratory technician for Fordham University studying freshwater algae from the Colorado River.

She is beyond excited to join SIC this season to assist with their diverse array of monitoring and management initiatives and investigate algal community composition within the Roger Williams Park watershed!
