As many of you may know, our leader, friend and visionary, Michael Brown, passed away on March 12 after his ten year ‘dance’ with cancer.
Michael was an avid sailor, and his love of the ocean influenced his life tremendously. As he became more aware of the downstream issues related to his business and the packaging industry, and how these issues specifically impacted his love of the ocean, he started Packaging2.0, RI’s first Benefit Corporation. It bridges the worlds of plastic design, manufacturing, reuse, recycling and sustainability by working to connect activists, educators and scientists to the plastics industry and end users.
Michael did something that few people on this planet ever achieve. He managed to align his business - packaging - with a deep sense of accountability for how we treat our planet and its stewardships, with his passion of the ocean. With that he launched Mission2.Ocean. Michael created such awareness to everyone around him on three fronts - that to enjoy life, be responsible and to make a living need not be rationalized and that they are and should be tied together.
Michael’s infectious energy and passion for the environment, in particular plastic pollution in our oceans, and his determination to cause change by educating about recycling, technology and research led to his involvement with organizations such as 5 Gyres, The Rozalia Project for a Clean Ocean, Sailors for the Sea and Clean Ocean Access. The world is a better place because of him.
As we move forward without Michael, we will follow his path and honor his dream by doing all we can to spread and grow Mission2.Ocean. We hope you’ll join us. In Michael’s memory, donations can be made to the wonderful organizations on the Mission2.Ocean site below.
Mission2.Ocean supports Operation Clean Sweep, Ocean Conservancy, 5 Gyres, Rozalia Project, Surfrider Foundation, Clean Ocean Access, Save the Bay and Sailors for the Sea.
