Save The Bay - Narragansett Bay Save The Bay protects, restores, and improves the ecological health of the Narragansett Bay region. Our history is one of accomplishment for the Bay.

Save The Bay was founded in 1970 on the community’s desire to protect our most precious resource - Narragansett Bay. To do that, Save The Bay has focused on the development of a committed constituency for the Bay. Children and adults throughout this region have learned the tremendous value the Bay brings to our economy, our environment, and our quality of life. In defense of Narragansett Bay and its watershed, Save The Bay has watched over the activities and programs of the government and the citizenry that degrade the environmental quality of the Bay, basin, and watershed. We provide educational opportunities for children and adults to explore the Bay, fostering an understanding and a sense of personal responsibility for the resource. Once choked by raw sewage and dying a slow death from industrial toxins, the Bay is now making a strong comeback. There is still room for improvement, but more people than ever before are able to swim, fish, sail, and enjoy the waters of Narragansett Bay. What follows is a timeline reflecting Save The Bay’s history and charting important milestones we have achieved toward protecting Narragansett Bay.

Join us for Creature Feature Fridays at Save The Bay's Hamilton Family Aquarium!

Every Friday from 10-11 am, join us for your chance to meet a special creature you don’t often see! During this unique program, one of our awesome aquarium educators will introduce you to a creature that is typically behind the scenes at the Aquarium. Educators will share some fascinating facts and explain how the featured animal is part of one of our animal management programs, including our Wildlife Nursery, Rescue, and Breeding Programs, and how these efforts support animals throughout our Aquarium and in Narragansett Bay. This drop-in-drop-out program is included with Aquarium admission.

Save The Bay’s education team recently visited the Tomaquag Museum to learn about native culture and how Save The Bay can integrate indigenous history into our education programming. Our staff was warmly welcomed by Nkekeke Harris and Sonia Thomas, who served as our educators for the day! We are excited to share with our students and public program guests a little more about the history of Narragansett Bay and the roles the first stewards of Narragansett Bay played in keeping our Bay clean and thriving for future generations to enjoy.

Members of the RI Senate and House of Representatives joined us yesterday for a microplastics trawl on the Providence River. Microplastics are a growing problem in the Bay with researchers at URI estimating there are now over a thousand tons of microplastics at the bottom of the Bay, with the problem getting worse each year.

The nitrogen and phosphorus in fertilizers are major contributors to water pollution and algae blooms in Narragansett Bay. If you must fertilize, do so sparingly. Fall is the best time to fertilize, before October 15th!

Some other fertilizer tips:
🌱Test the pH of your soil before adding fertilizer. If the pH of your lawn is too low, the grass will not be able to absorb the fertilizer.
🌱 To avoid excess nutrient runoff into storm drains that lead into the Bay, never fertilize immediately before or after a major rainfall.
🌱 Choose slow-release fertilizers that release nutrients gradually over time, making it less likely that excess nutrients will be washed off of your lawn and end up in the Bay.
