The 2026 RI legislative session is in the books. The good? We held off attempts to rollback climate action and toxic chemical restrictions. The bad? The bills we championed stalled. Get the details in our latest blog post!

Rhode Island legislative sessions are short and packed. This session ended with Clean Water Action fending off a last-minute attack on the state law restricting toxic PFAS, but many priority bills remained in limbo as the legislators broke for the summer. Here’s a breakdown of what happened!

GOOD NEWS UPDATE! Cheers to Garvin Elementary School in Cumberland, for swapping out their plastic utensils for durable, safe, reusable ones! 🍴This past year, Garvin switched to Ahimsa trays, and with the utensil switch, is now fully reusable for cafeteria foodware. Thank you Stephen Mulcahey and the Cumberland School Department for making the healthy, sustainable choice for our future leaders!

Story time! While most people were enjoying their weekend, industry lobbyists were trying to sneak in a bill to weaken RI's protections against toxic PFAS! Clean Water's RI Director, Emily Howe, sprung into action and rallied legislative allies on Sunday to stop this ridiculous effort. Thank you to Speaker Blazejewski, Majority Leader State Representative Katherine Kazarian , Terri Cortvriend, RI State Representative District 72 , Michelle McGaw RI State Representative District 71 , Rep. Rebecca Kislak - Dist. 4 RI , June Speakman, RI State Representative, District 68, Bristol & Warren , and Tina Spears for State Representative for their critical leadership protecting Rhode Islanders from hamrful chemicals! Never a dull moment at the end of session!

Congress must protect the Toxic Substances Control Act, our nation’s bedrock chemical safety law, and reject efforts to weaken public health protections. Everyone deserves to live in a world where health comes first—where the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breathe, and the products we use are safe.
