If you’ve ever wondered how you can get involved with The Telling Room as an adult, we have exciting news for you! We are hosting three adult-focused writing workshops for you to try your hand at some new ways of expressing yourself through the literary arts.

All our workshops will be held at our new location on 55 Washington Avenue, Suite 1E, Portland, Maine.

Comics Workshop - For Adults!
Calling all doodlers, sketchers, inkers and scribblers! Join us on Wednesday, January 20th, (from 6:00pm-7:30pm) for a night of food, fun, and COMICS. We'll harness The Telling Room's philosophy of play and collaboration, as we draw, experiment, and share stories one panel at a time. No comics experience necessary and all are welcome. This won't be a traditional workshop but rather a chance to make communal drawings, play games, and get a taste of what The Telling Room is all about. Comics Workshop will be taught by multidisciplinary artist, Andy Cole!

The Letter You Keep Meaning to Send
When’s the last time you stuck an envelope in a good old-fashioned royal blue mailbox? Do you just need time and space to focus? Or, do you need to take some time to process why you haven't sent it? Is there a version you can write and rip up, instead? On Wednesday, February 10th (from 6:00pm-7:30pm), we will be hosting a workshop with Telling Room teacher, Sonya Tomlinson, on how to get to the heart of what you're trying to say through the lost art of letter writing.

Fourth Grade Poetry - For Adults!
Poetry: terrifying to adults, second nature to children. But why? In this workshop on Wednesday, March 17th (from 6:00pm-7:30pm), we'll attempt to reverse the effects of decades of fear-mongering, reintroducing poetry to participants using the very same games, texts, and writing prompts that Telling Room teaching artists bring to elementary-school classrooms. These are playful, open-ended activities suitable for writers of all ages. Recess not included!

We invite youth from all over Maine, ages 6 - 18, to show off their writing, and the contest closes in one month, at 11:59 p.m. on November 15th, 2026. 🚗 Last weekend was a Telling Room road trip! We traveled up to Presque Isle to the Mark & Emily Turner Memorial Library's space, Library House, for a reading with Mo Drammeh and Sophia Tyutyunnyk. The Library House hosted our authors, they did some writing of their own in residency, and they shared snippets of their published works with attendees. It was a journey with spectacular foliage and we were grateful to be able to share our author’s work with areas of Maine far and wide! ⁠🍁

Mo Drammeh read from their novel, WHERE THE CRYPTIDS FLED, a cautionary tale that interrogates validity: who is valid, and why? Who determines what identities are wrong and right? And most of all, when you are determined to be invalid, when society has rejected you, what do you do?⁠

Sophia Tyutyunnyk shared an excerpt from her coming-of-age memoir, CANDLE ON THE TREE, about the anxious and formative months she spent living in Ukraine during the final stages of her family’s path to legal residency in the United States.⁠

It’s been almost a week since we hosted our Open House in our new space, and we are so grateful to our entire Telling Room community for joining us! 🎉

We opened up the space to friends, family, and hopeful new members to our organization. There were tons of fun writing activities, original Telling Room books for sale, and prizes to be won. Showcasing our new home on Washington Avenue was really important to us, because creating a sense of belonging to the people who make The Telling Room happen—our staff, our students, and our neighbors—is paramount to everything we do.

We hope to be able to host more functions in the future as we settle in during the start of this program season. We have a much bigger space for programming and communing now, so be on the lookout for more events that we share!

We're excited to launch into our goal of raising $1 million dollars by June 30th, 2029 with over $300,000 already committed towards the campaign, thanks to the generous support of our giving community.

Our goal is to raise one million dollars by June 30th, 2029 to support The Telling Room's transition to our new home and the people who serve thousands of Maine youth annually, creating a sense of belonging while building confidence around their skills of literacy and self-expression. This three year campaign begins with over $300,000 already committed towards the one million dollar goal.⁠

Join us on October 11th for this event in partnership with The Poets Corner, where authors from our 2026 anthology, RISE: AN ANTHOLOGY OF YOUTH CLIMATE WRITING AND ART, share their works, hopes, and inspirations for the future! This event is free and open to the public, and will provide a space to listen to young voices lead a discussion on the ways that climate change, art, and science intersect.

Mo Drammeh grew up in Bangor, Maine, where they have lived all of their life. In 2022, Mo won the Crime Flash Competition from the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance and was named among Maine Magazine's Mainers of The Year. Mo is now in their senior year at the University of Maine, and is still recognized for their incredible storytelling and world-building, even past their time spent at The Telling Room as a young author.
