The Oregon Health Care Interpreters Association (OHCIA) was founded by health care interpreters to represent their professional interests, promote cooperation with federal, state and local government agencies, connect with clients of health care interpreter services and educate other stakeholders about the need to provide interpreting services to limited English proficient (LEP) clients and methods for utilizing health care interpreters in medical settings.

Is your health care interpreter credential about to expire?

Health care interpreters qualified or certified by the Oregon Health Authority must complete 24 hours of OHA-approved CEUs before their expiration date to renew. This includes six hours of ethics, six hours of skills, and 12 hours of additional approved topics. Our CEUs also count toward CCHI and IMIA/NBCMI renewal. Is your health care interpreter credential about to expire?

Remember that health care interpreters who are qualified or certified by the Oregon Health Authority must complete 24 hours of OHA-approved continuing education units (CEUs) before the expiration date in order to renew their credential.

Facilitator: Katie Azarow is a licensed mental health and substance use treatment provider with over 15 years of clinical experience. She has ample knowledge of the daily challenges that health care interpreters face while serving others.

Objective: The aim is to create a safe space where interpreters can discuss their experiences with challenging cases, share personal stories, receive feedback from group members and the facilitator, solve tough problems, brainstorm ways to boost their sense of personal success while interpreting, process vicarious trauma associated with interpreting in mental health settings, and foster a sense of community and support while reducing isolation within the field.

Theme: Working with Children and Adolescents in the Mental Health Sphere
When: Saturday, September 19, 2026, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm

💥Instructor: Katie Azarow

Course Description: In this course, learners will get a better understanding of how to navigate when a child or teenager is the primary client. Age of consent for services, issues of confidentiality and parental consent for services will all be discussed. Additionally, we’ll talk through how to manage a range of challenges that young people can bring to mental health appointments. Lastly, learners will be provided more information and education around working with special interest groups (i.e. LBGTQIA+, race/ethnic diversity, kids in foster care, substance users, etc.)

Learning Objectives:

Learners will differentiate practice for adult vs minor clients, and learn ways to navigate working with minor clients.

Learners will be able to discuss different treatment issues that come up at different stages of life for children, adolescents and adults.

Learners will gain tools that can be implemented in session, with minors exhibiting challenging behaviors.
Learners will be taught how to interpret what is happening in the therapy room with a minor client, as well as dynamics at play with their parents/caregivers.

Learners will build confidence in knowledge and skill acquisition around working with LGBTQ+ youth.
