REGISTRATION FOR THE FALL 60-HOUR HEALTH CARE INTERPRETER TRAINING ONLINE WILL BE OPEN AUGUST 24, 2026.

OHCIA's 60-hour training course has been approved by the Oregon Health Authority for instruction online. This course provides a foundation for health care interpreting including human anatomy, physiology and medical terminology. Students learn about message conversion, memory, sight translation and other skills necessary for professional interpreting.

How: One hour per month via Zoom

Facilitator: Katie Azarow is a licensed mental health and substance use treatment provider with over 15 years of clinical experience. She has ample knowledge of the daily challenges that health care interpreters face while serving others.

Objective: The aim is to create a safe space where interpreters can discuss their experiences with challenging cases, share personal stories, receive feedback from group members and the facilitator, solve tough problems, brainstorm ways to boost their sense of personal success while interpreting, process vicarious trauma associated with interpreting in mental health settings, and foster a sense of community and support while reducing isolation within the field.

OHCIA and CareOregon are launching a new project that will provide 50 scholarships, each worth $200, to support non-credentialed active interpreters and aspiring interpreters as they complete the 60-hour training program to become state-accredited health care interpreters in 2026.

The ultimate goals are to increase the number of credentialed interpreters and improve the safety and quality of health care for our Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients.

Students approved for the $200 CareOregon scholarship will also be eligible for one-time funding from OHCIA to cover the cost of the proficiency test, if needed to fulfill state requirements.
