This May 1st, immigrants, workers, and allies across Oregon are coming together for A Day Without an Immigrant — a powerful, statewide demonstration.

For 24 hours, we’re stepping away from work, school, and shopping to show what Oregon looks like without us. Because the truth is: Oregon can’t run without immigrants.

Immigrants make up 19% of the U.S. workforce, contributing across every industry — from healthcare to agriculture to education. Yet families are being torn apart through fear-based enforcement. These attacks are meant to silence us. We refuse to be silent.

Highlights from our staff retreat ✨💖

We took time to build community & engage in strategic planning with staff last week, as we envision and build for the future of Unite. We are so thankful for our time together as we continue to strengthen Unite internally so that we can contribute to building the movement towards a more just, livable Oregon for everyone.

What if our communities could keep the land we live on—now and for future generations? 🌱

Community Land Trusts (CLTs) are a powerful tool for building long-term stability, preserving affordability, and preventing displacement—especially for communities historically excluded from land ownership.

Join us for Understanding Community Land Trusts to learn:
• What CLTs are and how they work
• Their origins and role today
• How they help preserve community land ownership

We’re excited to share that we are hosting our second Lotería de Paisanos event in collaboration with the Hillsboro Downtown Partnership (HDP)!

📍 Location: Paisanos Plaza
966 SE Oak St, Hillsboro, OR 97123
📅 Date & Time: Wednesday, April 22 | 4:00–8:00 PM

This event is all about bringing new energy to Paisanos Plaza by inviting community members who may not have visited before—or who don’t normally shop there—to come out and discover what it has to offer. We’ve intentionally planned it on one of the slower days of the week to help boost visibility and support for local businesses.

For those unfamiliar, Paisanos Plaza is a vibrant, flea market-style space in Hillsboro featuring a wide variety of vendors. While many businesses offer delicious food options, there are also vendors selling non-food items such as blankets, perfumes, cookware, medicinal herbs and plants, clothing, and more.

During Lotería de Paisanos, participants will take part in an interactive, bingo-style game designed to encourage support for these businesses. Each square on the game card represents an activity—such as following a business on social media, leaving a Google review, purchasing a food or non-food item, and more. As participants complete each activity, they mark off their card.

No need to RSVP, just show up with your friends and family!

For over 15 years, Unite Oregon has led the Pan-Immigrant Leadership and Organizing Training (PILOT) program to cultivate leadership within immigrant and refugee communities in Oregon. Grounded in ethical principles such as reciprocity and transparency, PILOT equips emerging leaders with foundational knowledge, practical skills, and networks to drive transformative change across communities.

Using a popular education model, centered on lived experience, and participatory learning, PILOT creates a transformative space where participants build personal power, analyze systems of oppression, and develop organizing strategies aligned with Unite Oregon’s Six Pillars: Climate Justice, Housing, Community Safety, Health Equity, Education, and Equitable Community Development.

PILOT (Pan Immigrant Leadership Organizing Training) builds power across immigrant and refugee communities through leadership and organizing skill development. Learn to advocate for social change while connecting with others who share your passion for community. Open to immigrants, refugees, asylees, and children of immigrants/refugees/asylees. Interpretation available.

03/31/2026

Community ownership is an example of where neighbors collectively own and govern local resources, is one such strategy. At its core, community ownership means that “resources, assets, or services are collectively owned and managed by a community.” By sharing responsibility for land, businesses, and housing, communities can build lasting wealth together.

In Oregon, immigrant, refugee, and BIPOC communities face significant barriers to owning land, homes, and businesses. As Possibility Labs points out, “control over property ownership has been a tool used to oppress Black and Brown communities throughout the United States' history”, from sharecropping to redlining. To begin to repair this legacy, we need bold strategies that put people before profit.

This workshop will cover how co-ops share ownership and control, how they are financed (member equity, loans, grants) and governed (democratic boards). We will cover different types (worker, consumer, producer, housing) and how a co-op differs from a regular corporation. Attendees will learn about Oregon co-ops and how to start or join one.

📍 Location: Online via Zoom
📅 Date & Time: April 8th 2026 6-7PM
💵 Cost: Free

This event will be hosted by the Southwest Corridor Equity Coalition (SWEC) in partnership with Northwest Cooperative Development Center and Unite Oregon Staff.
