As American tax dollars continue to fund genocide and dispossession in Palestine, we are gathering to direct our resources toward survival and mutual aid. We are raising funds directly for Gaza Soup Kitchen to support their vital mission on the ground in Gaza.
Anchoring our fundraising in the Days of Awe, we come together for Tashlich to cast off our sins, hold our grief, and take action for collective liberation.

Please join us on Sunday, September 20 at 10a.m. at Sellwood Waterfront Park for an Anti-Zionist Jewish Tashlich Gathering and Gaza Soup Kitchen Fundraiser.

When Selina moved to Portland three years ago, she joined JVP Portland looking for community, other anti-Zionist Jews, friends, and fellow organizers. Our community is intergenerational, secular and religious, Jewish and not, lifelong organizers and brand new ones—united in our commitment to Palestinian liberation.

Tisha B'Av was last week. Is it a day when Jews remember the destruction of the Second Temple and the trauma of seeing our holiest places reduced to rubble.

That memory should deepen our commitment to protecting everyone's sacred spaces.

Since October 2023:
- UNESCO has verified damage to 164 cultural heritage sites in Gaza, including 14 religious sites.
- Gaza officials report 835 mosques destroyed, 180 damaged, multiple churches struck, and 40 of Gaza's 60 cemeteries destroyed.
- In Lebanon, 24 religious and cultural heritage sites have been damaged or destroyed.
- During Passover 2026, Israel destroyed Tehran's Rafi-Nia Synagogue, saying it was collateral damage from a nearby military strike.

The destruction of houses of worship is not only heartbreaking. It is prohibited under international law and represents the loss of history, culture, community, and the ability to worship safely.

On this Tisha B'Av, we remember our own history by refusing to accept the destruction of anyone else's. Tell Congress to stop funding Israel's destruction of human life and cultural heritage.

Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya has spent more than 18 months imprisoned by the Israeli military without charge or trial.

A pediatrician and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, Dr. Abu Safiya refused to abandon his patients, even after his own son was killed in an Israeli airstrike. When Israeli forces raided the hospital on December 27, 2024, they detained him alongside other medical workers and patients. He has remained in custody ever since.

After a recent prison visit, his lawyer said he was "unrecognizable" from the abuse he had endured. Dr. Abu Safiya told him: "They brought me here to kill me." He also said, "I don't see myself surviving. This is the end."

His case is not unique. Dozens of Palestinian healthcare workers remain imprisoned by Israel, while thousands have been detained and more than 1,700 healthcare workers have been killed during Israel's assault on Gaza.

We cannot stay silent.

Call Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, along with your U.S. Representative, and demand they publicly call for Dr. Abu Safiya's immediate release. Ask them to press the White House and State Department for his freedom and to use every tool available, including enforcement of the Leahy Law, to hold human rights violators accountable.

It can feel futile to contact elected officials who have ignored our demands before. But silence makes inaction easier. Organized pressure makes it harder.

Keep calling. Keep speaking. Keep Palestine in the conversation.

The Senate is preparing to vote on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), the annual defense spending bill, and we need to act now.

This year’s bill includes Section 224, the “United States-Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative,” which would dramatically deepen U.S.-Israel military integration by expanding joint weapons development, military data sharing, and other critical defense systems. It moves far beyond military aid toward extensive military partnership. We are asking Oregon’s senators to oppose this.

Thank Senator Jeff Merkley for urging the removal of Section 224 from the NDAA, and ask him to continue opposing this dangerous expansion of military cooperation.

📞 Sen. Merkley
(202) 224-3753 (D.C.)
(503) 326-3386 (Portland)

Then call Senator Ron Wyden and urge him to act now by signing onto the letter to remove Section 224 from the NDAA.

📞 Sen. Wyden
(202) 224-5244 (D.C.)
(503) 326-7525 (Portland)

Finally, urge both senators to vote NO on the NDAA as a whole. The bill authorizes more than $1.5 trillion in military spending for FY2027 and continues to expand U.S. militarization.

Call today. It only takes a few minutes, and your voice matters.

EVENT DETAILS:
Gaza Still Needs You is a community fundraising dinner organized in partnership with members of Portland’s Palestinian community and allies to support the vital work of the Gaza Community Mental Health Programme (GCMHP). Our community goal is to raise $15,000 by June 19 to help sustain this essential work.

The people of Gaza continue to face extraordinary challenges as the genocide continues. Founded in 1990, GCMHP is the leading Palestinian organization dedicated to mental health care in Gaza. Even after their clinics were destroyed, GCMHP counselors have continued their work—offering therapy, psychological first aid, and crisis support to tens of thousands of people, often from tents and temporary shelters.

REGISTRATION:
Please complete the online form (http://bit.ly/gcmhp). We are suggesting each person pay $35 to cover the cost of the meal and event expenses. Attendees are welcome to contribute more or less based on their financial circumstances. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please send your registration contribution via Venmo to Maxine Sherrin-fookson when you complete this form. Any funds remaining after event expenses are covered will be donated directly to the GCMHP.

DONATIONS: You can make your tax-deductible donation to GCMHP Foundation at https://www.gazamentalhealth.org/gaza-still-needs-you/

Accessibility: The venue and rest rooms are fully accessible. Since we will be eating, we are not making masks mandatory.

It’s always a good day to tell AIPAC to f*** off.

We’ve all had enough. Are you wondering why your elected officials still support genocide and apartheid, even though their constituents want them to stop? It’s because of big money corporate groups like AIPAC that are funneling cash into politics. A warmongering, pro-genocide, extremist group, AIPAC needs to get the f*** out. From cheerleading for genocide, to demanding billions for apartheid, to supporting white supremacists, to pouring Republican billionaire money into elections, AIPAC’s depravity knows no bounds.

That’s why we’re telling AIPAC to f*** off.

But here’s the good news: Our movements are getting stronger, and AIPAC is getting weaker. More elected officials are rejecting AIPAC money and support, and it’s because of organizing.

One way to fight AIPAC is to tell your elected officials to do the opposite of what AIPAC wants.

Demand Congress fund people, not bombs:

Jewish Voice for Peace Portland stands in grief and rage against the horrific violence that occurred on the campus of the Islamic Center of San Diego. We join our Muslim friends and family in mourning the loss of Amin Abdullah, Mansour Kazlha, and Nadir Awad. We recognize that this egregious loss of life is intrinsically connected to the current political climate — the fostering of hatred towards Muslims, severe xenophobia proliferated by the highest government officials, and the ongoing genocidal actions undertaken by the United States and Israeli governments. This violence is all deeply interconnected and we commit and recommit ourselves to the ongoing fight to end these atrocious cycles of harm. We wish peace and healing to the San Diego Muslim community and to all those impacted by this shooting.

Please consider donating to the impacted families: bit.ly/supporticsd
