May’s Word of the Month: Vicarious Trauma

Vicarious Trauma: the emotional, cognitive, and physical exhaustion resulting from empathically engaging with trauma survivors.
Also known as “the cost of caring.”

Supporting survivors of domestic violence can expose you to repeated stories of fear, coercion, grief, danger, and crisis. And over time, that can lead to vicarious trauma. If you do not take care of yourself while caring for others, vicarious trauma can quietly consume your emotional and physical well-being, leaving you unable to effectively support anyone- including yourself.

Here are 7 quick tips to reduce the impacts of vicarious trauma.

💜 Showing up for survivors can look a multitude of different ways. Sometimes it looks like an Advocate assisting a survivor in securing safe transportation to enable their independence in getting to the places they need to be.

A Bradley Angle participant recently reached out to thank us for the portable electric wheelchair that they received.

Providing survivors with safe and accessible transportation helps remove barriers to critical resources and opportunities, empowering them to reclaim independence, rebuild stability, and move forward with confidence and dignity.

Our Economic Empowerment Program Team loves to get creative when they are doing team bonding activities! They recently went to The Candle Creation Bar to attend an Intention Candle Making Session where they drifted into curiosity, embraced calm, and reminded themselves that they are more than enough.

It’s important to take time for moments like this. When we asked Nalicia, our Economic Empowerment Coordinator, what the experience was like- she said, “I 10/10 recommend!”
