Juneteenth honors the day in 1865 when enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas finally learned they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth reminds us that freedom is not an anniversary — it’s an ongoing commitment.

At Through These Doors, we know that the fight to end domestic abuse is inseparable from the fight against racism. Today marks a day to commemorate the momentous work of Black activists and leaders that lead to the abolishment of slavery. It is also a time to recognize the ongoing activism that continues today, challenging the many systems that embody the remnants of slavery and restrict access to freedom. The domestic violence movement would not be where it is today without the anti-racism movements that work to provide everyone with a life without violence.

Today is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Abuse in later life, sometimes known as ‘Elder Abuse,’ occurs in all communities. It affects people of all ethnic, cultural, racial, economic, and religious backgrounds. TTD collaborates with community partners to enhance safety for all victims.

TTD provides advocacy services to address the needs of people ages 50 or older who are experiencing or have experienced emotional, psychological, physical, financial, or sexual abuse. The abusive person may be a spouse, former spouse, partner, adult child, extended family member, or caregiver. Every older adult has the right to live free from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

We are so thankful to have such thoughtful supporters, sometimes it's the little details that can make a difference. 💜

In fiscal year 2025, TTD sheltered 20 children with their moms, as they fled abuse together. We were able to provide a safe space for mothers to rest and heal. While our shelter and services are free and confidential for all survivors, we have housed and served many mothers since our start in 1977. 💜💛🌷

While our advocates are not therapists, our 24/7 free and confidential helpline is here for you. The week of April 19 to 25, 2026 marks the 45th anniversary of National Crime Victims’ Rights Week (NCVRW), first proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981. NCVRW is a time-honored tradition
that recognizes the plight of victims and survivors, and elevates their voices so that when they speak, America can listen and learn.

The 2026 NCVRW theme, CommUNITY, emphasizes the “unity in the community” of countless people who support crime survivors – from victim service organizations to criminal justice and mental/behavioral health professionals, to multi-Faith institutions and leaders, and to family members and friends of survivors, among others. No crime survivor should have to endure the burden of victimization alone; there is a strong
community of caring and concerned people nationwide who want to help them.
