Connecting the Dots Between Health Care and Domestic Violence!

On the second Wednesday of October, we recognize the important role health care professionals play in identifying and responding to domestic violence.

This year, The Maine Coalition to End Domestic Violence (MCEDV) is organizing a training for health care providers across Maine on Domestic Violence and
Universal Education. An initiative to help strengthen collaboration and coordination between health care and domestic violence services, ensuring that survivors receive comprehensive support that addresses both their safety and health care needs.

October 14th marks Health Cares About Domestic Violence Day. Domestic violence is a health issue, and healthcare providers have an important role to play in supporting survivors.

Futures Without Violence reports that more than 3 out of 4 survivors of domestic violence talk with a healthcare provider about their experiences. This means healthcare settings can be an important place for survivors to be heard, believed, and connected with support.

Supporting survivors can be as simple as:
💜 Creating a safe and confidential space
💜 Listening without judgment
💜 Respecting a survivor’s choices
💜 Offering information and resources
💜 Connecting patients with local domestic violence resource centers

Today, we recognize healthcare providers who help make safety, support, and healing possible. Your response can make a difference. 💜

Yesterday, members our Through These Doors team rolled up their sleeves and volunteered at Maine Needs! 💜

helps connect individuals and families across Maine with basic necessities like clothing, household items, and other essential resources during times of transition and hardship. As we recognize Domestic Violence Action Month, we're reminded that support for survivors extends far beyond our services. It takes a community coming together to help people rebuild, heal, and move forward.
We're grateful for the opportunity to partner with organizations making a difference every day and proud to support survivors through the power of community.

Throughout the month, keep an eye out for purple lights shining across Cumberland County as our community comes together to raise awareness about domestic violence and show support for survivors.

Have your own purple lights up? We want to see them! 💜 Tag us in your photos and help us light up Cumberland County in support of survivors and those impacted by domestic violence.

Visit Coffee By Design in Portland and Wild Oats in Brunswick to receive your free purple ribbon sticker and show your support for survivors and victims of domestic violence this October.

About Lavendar Cafes: The Lavendar Cafe Campaign started in 2025, and this is the second year of connecting with coffee shops across Cumberland County. This is an awareness campaign to show our helpline number in community spaces where survivors may work, shop, or socialize. If you are a coffee shop or small business owner and would like to participate, please DM us and we can coordinate!
