Nearly 25 years ago, after coming off shift on 9/11, FDNY Firefighter Stephen Siller, assigned to Brooklyn Squad 1, heard on his scanner of a plane crashing into the North Tower. FF Siller returned to his station to grab his gear and drove to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, where he found the entrance closed for security reasons. With 60lbs of gear on his back FF Siller raced on foot through the tunnel to the World Trade Center.

FF Stephen Siller was one of 343 FDNY firefighters who died in the line of duty on 9/11. His story is one of bravery, determination and selflessness, and it is also the story that inspired the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization that continues FF Siller's legacy by helping the families of fallen first responders and military veterans.

Earlier today, the Portland Fire Department was dispatched to a Weymouth Street property for an automatic fire alarm indicating water flow. Upon arrival, crews discovered that a kitchen fire had been extinguished by a single fire sprinkler head.

Fortunately, no one was injured, and damage was limited to minor water damage in only two units.

This incident is another powerful example of how quickly and effectively residential fire sprinkler systems can control a fire—protecting lives, limiting property damage, and giving occupants valuable time to escape.

On a summer night in 1866, a single stray firecracker set off one of the most destructive urban fires in New England history, and it reshaped an entire city almost overnight.

The Great Fire of Portland began on the Fourth of July when a firecracker ignited a boat builder's shop near the waterfront. Fanned by strong winds, the flames spread rapidly through the mostly wooden downtown, eventually destroying more than a thousand buildings, including homes, churches, businesses, and much of the city's commercial core. Thousands of residents were left homeless in a single night.

In the years that followed, Portland rebuilt with an emphasis on brick and masonry construction to prevent a disaster of that scale from happening again, permanently reshaping the look and layout of the city's downtown that still stands today.

We remember Private Walter Webster, who on this day in 1932 died in the line of duty. Private Webster joined the department as a substitute Callman in 1901, was appointed a regular Callman in 1903 and was appointed a permanent member in June 1923. He was assigned to Ladder 5. Private Webster, Badge #32, died from an apparent heart attack suffered while working at Box 2-814, a 2-alarm structure fire at 2B Monroe Place. He was 56 years old.

For his supreme sacrifice he is remembered, and in the dedication and courage of all our active and retired members, and all firefighters past and present, his spirit lives on.
