Chartered in 1964, the Maine State Building & Construction Trades Council (MSBCTC) brings together 20 local affiliates throughout Maine representing more than 6,000 skilled workers in the building and construction trades. The MSBCTC works with State and municipal governments and organizations, as well as developers, contractors and non-profits, to increase the number of unionized opportunities in

construction throughout Maine. The MSBCTC also represents workers' interests in Augusta and Washington, DC by actively promoting and tracking legislation that protects collective bargaining rights, improves working conditions and safety, increases benefits and wages, and encourages local hiring.

The Union Construction Academy is now accepting applications!

Our four-week pre-apprenticeship program provides a pathway into rewarding Union careers for a diverse workforce, including women, African Americans, veterans, immigrants, individuals with disabilities, people from rural areas, and individuals who have had involvement with the corrections system.

Participants learn a range of hands-on skills and earn six-industry recognized credentials that will help them to land competitive apprenticeships and succeed once they get started. Our pre-apprentices also learn about the benefits of Union membership, and hear from Union representatives who teach them about the ins and outs of their trades.

We are currently recruiting for our spring/summer sessions. The first is coming up on June 10-July 3 in Portland. We will also be running a Women in the Trades session of the Union Construction Academy from July 22-August 16.

April 28th was International Workers’ Memorial Day. 23 Working Mainers lost their lives in 2023 due to their work and/or their working conditions - at least three of whom were members of Maine’s construction workforce.

And yet astonishingly, there are some politicians in Washington and some *very, very close to home here in Maine* who’d rather work hard to find reasons to reject reasonable labor standards, worker protections and even the most modest attempts to raise the bar for our industry. Along with remembering those who lost their lives, we also remember that demonstrably dangerous approach.

Delivered to a sold-out crowd at the Western Maine Central Labor Council’s 18th Annual Workers’ Memorial Day dinner in Rumford, Maine Bureau of Labor Standards Director Dr. Jason Moyer-Lee discussed government’s role in protecting working Mainers. Intorduced by Maine AFL-CIO Executive Director Matt Schlobohm, Moyer-Lee's speech and his actions at the helm of the department and under the leadership of Department of Labor Commissioner Laura Fortman show that there are some who do get it. And working families are and will be safer because of them.

As Mother Jones was famously quoted, “Mourn the dead and fight like hell for the living.”

Are you ready to join us in that fight? Comment below.

“We knew that Maine had an opportunity to be a national leader in this industry,” Mr. Shedlock said recently. “We also knew that if we didn’t insist on strong labor standards, that industry would be sold to the lowest bidder.”

Labor leaders worry that some federal incentives for renewable energy do not come with strict standards on pay. In Maine, they added their own.
