The AVMA named Dr. Susan Chadima, a Maine-based veterinarian who has worked for decades to strengthen Afghanistan’s animal health infrastructure, as the winner of the 2025 AVMA Global Veterinary Service Award.

The risk status of avian flu in Maine has been elevated from “moderate” to “high.”

Jim Britt, spokesperson for the state Department of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry, said migratory birds are on the move and it's their interaction with commercial and backyard flocks that spreads avian flu.
