The union representing school teachers in Maine is expressing concerns about staff cuts included in early drafts of some school budgets.

Lewiston, Portland, and South Portland all proposed budgets this week with 20 or more staff positions cut.

Jesse Hargrove at the Maine Education Association said in all, the 125 cut positions in those three districts may have a chilling effect across the entire state.

The Portland Education Association stands in solidarity with our Somali and East African members, students, families, and neighbors. Donald Trump's disgraceful attacks on our Somali and East African Community members are completely unacceptable and shameful.

It seems that we are right now in a particularly heightened moment where Trump is flooding the zone with a relentless deluge of daily chaos. We understand that this is a deliberate strategy to prevent sustained focus on any single issue, and so, we would like to take this moment to reiterate the following:

We at the Portland Education Association stand with, and will continue to, protect and defend the students, educators, parents, and neighbors who make up our communities - regardless of where they were born, their gender identity, or any disability diagnosis. Period.
