Human trafficking isn't only a big-city problem.

It isn't only something that happens overseas.

And it isn't always obvious.

Trafficking has been reported in communities across Michigan, and exploitation can happen in cities, suburbs, and rural communities.

That's why awareness matters.

We don't need communities living in fear. We need communities that know what to look for, know how to respond, and know where to turn for help.

**Learn the signs. Share what you learn. Help build a community where exploitation is harder to hide.**

Online grooming doesn't always begin with something obviously dangerous.

Sometimes it begins with attention.

A follow.
A compliment.
A new friendship.
Someone who seems to understand.

Over time, that attention may become secrecy, pressure, manipulation, sexual requests, isolation, or attempts to move conversations somewhere more private.

One interaction alone doesn't prove grooming. What matters is the pattern.

Talk with young people about online relationships before something feels wrong. Make sure they know they can come to a trusted adult without automatically losing their phone, getting blamed, or being punished for asking for help.

**Awareness is prevention. Share this with another parent or caregiver.**

“Don't talk to strangers.”

Many of us grew up hearing it.

But here's what every parent, caregiver, teacher, and young person should know:

A trafficker doesn't have to be a stranger.

Traffickers can be people someone already knows or trusts—including friends, romantic partners, peers, and family members.

That changes the prevention conversation.

We need to teach young people more than how to recognize a suspicious stranger. We need to help them recognize manipulation, pressure, secrecy, unhealthy relationships, and situations that don't feel right.

Knowing someone does not automatically make that person safe.

Share this. It's a conversation worth having.

585 people in Michigan.

In 2024, 585 people were involved in human trafficking situations reported to the National Human Trafficking Hotline in our state.

And that number does not tell the whole story. Hotline data reflects situations reported to the Hotline—not every trafficking situation that occurred.

This is happening closer to home than many people realize.

The more we understand what trafficking can actually look like, the better prepared we are to recognize warning signs and respond appropriately.

Learn the signs. Talk about them. Share this information.

Awareness is where prevention begins.

This event is about so much more than crossing a finish line. It is about a community coming together to stand with survivors of human trafficking and support their journey toward healing, independence and a new beginning.

We are especially grateful to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard and the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, and to Cindy Brown, who leads the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office Trafficking Unit, for joining us and for their commitment to combating human trafficking in our communities.

To our runners, walkers, families, volunteers, sponsors, donors and everyone who shared our mission: you helped make this day possible.

The Run may be over, but the mission continues. 🦋

The people who target children don’t always look dangerous. Often, they begin by building trust.

Join HOPE Against Trafficking for Keeping Our Children Safe: A Parent Awareness Night, a practical evening for parents, grandparents, caregivers, educators and youth leaders.

We’ll discuss online and offline risks, grooming and manipulation tactics, warning signs, healthy boundaries, family safety planning, and how to talk with children about safety without creating fear.
