Flannán mac Toirrdelbaig was an Irish saint who lived in the 7th century and was the son of an Irish chieftain, Toirdhealbhach of the Dál gCais. He became an abbot at St. Molua’s monastery in Killaloe, County Clare. He made a pilgrimage to Rome where Pope John IV consecrated him as the first Bishop of Killaloe. He was canonised in 1902 by Pope Leo XIII.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT A SEANCHAÍ IS? ☘️

For centuries in Ireland, history wasn’t only written down — it was told.

A seanchaí (shan-a-KEE) is a traditional Irish storyteller: a keeper of stories, folklore, local history, genealogy and memory, passed from one generation to the next through the spoken word.

And this Monday, you’ll have the opportunity to hear that tradition firsthand.

Seán Ó Coistealbha, from An Spidéal in the Connemara Gaeltacht, is a renowned seanchaí, poet, author, actor and lifelong champion of the Irish language and culture. For decades, Seán has helped preserve and share the stories, language and traditions of the Gaeltacht — not simply as pieces of history, but as a living Irish culture meant to be passed on.

On Monday, September 7, Seán will be at Galway Girl in Plymouth alongside Irish stone lifter and author David Keohan, bringing two ancient traditions together:

The stories we carried.
The stones we lifted.

🎙️ Craic on the Coast — the official podcast of the AOH of the South Shore — will be there recording, and we’re looking forward to sitting down with Seán and David to talk about storytelling, stone lifting, Gaeilge, Connemara and the importance of keeping these traditions alive.

You don’t have to travel to the west of Ireland to hear the tradition of the seanchaí.

This Monday, a little bit of Connemara is coming to Plymouth. 🇮🇪

Saint Cillian was born around 640 in Cloughballybeg, County Cavan. He studied at St Fachtna’s monastery in Rosscarbery, County Cork, and later established his own monastery foundation in Kenmare. There he trained 11 monks to accompany him on a mission outside of Ireland. They settled in Würzburg, where Cillian’s evangelisation mission was very successful; however, Cillian told the local Duke that he was in violation of sacred scripture by being married to his brother’s widow, and for this, he was martyred in 689. Cillian is one of the patron saints for sufferers of rheumatism.

Craic on the Coast is hitting the road! 🎙️☘️

This Monday, September 7, we’re taking the microphones to The Galway Girl in Plymouth for an afternoon celebrating Irish storytelling, strength, music and heritage.

We’ll be there recording and taking in the day as legendary seanchaí Seán Ó Coistealbha and David Keohan of Indiana Stones bring two remarkable Irish traditions together — the power of the spoken story and the centuries-old tradition of stone lifting.

There’ll also be songs, poetry, book signing and plenty of craic along the way.

As the official podcast of the AOH of the South Shore, Craic on the Coast is all about getting out into our community and sharing the people, traditions and stories that keep our Irish heritage alive here on the South Shore.

The National Graves Association (N.G.A.), in partnership with Fenian Memorial Committee of America, will unveil a monument commemorating the great Catalpa Escape.
The Catalpa Escape took place 150 years ago. Six Fenian prisoners were rescued from captivity in Western Australia by the whaling ship The Catalpa.
