🎙️ NEW EPISODE OUT NOW 🎙️

What do a daring prison break, a whaling ship from New Bedford, a Fenian revolutionary, and an American flag have in common?

The answer is one of the greatest stories in Irish and Irish-American history.

This week on Craic on the Coast, we’re joined by historian and filmmaker Marcus Howard to discuss the incredible story of the Catalpa Rescue—the daring mission that freed six Irish political prisoners from Australia and delivered a humiliating blow to the British Empire.

We also explore the life and legacy of John Boyle O’Reilly, whose story stretches from Ireland to Australia and ultimately to Massachusetts, where he became one of the most influential Irish-American voices of the nineteenth century.

If you’ve ever heard someone say, “How is this not a movie?”—this episode is for you.

The Ancient Order of Hibernians has long believed that defending human dignity means more than words. It means supporting mothers, families, children, the elderly, and those facing difficult circumstances.

Faith, Friendship, and Christian Charity call us not only to affirm the value of human life, but to stand beside those who need our help most.

May our commitment to life always be reflected in our actions as well as our beliefs.

Born on October 16, 1890, in Woodfield, Sam’s Cross, Michael Collins’ early life was spent in a house that is now a National Monument. The house in the image is where he was born, however the family built another house on the same land and moved into it in 1900. This second house was burned by the British Army during the Irish War of Independence - remains of the house can still be seen today.

The banshee is a female spirit in Irish folklore and is considered to be an omen of death. The banshee roams the countryside and can be heard wailing when she predicts a death. The word banshee comes from the Irish bean sí (pronounced ban-shee) which translates as woman of the fairy mounds. She is usually dressed in a grey or white hooded cloak. While not always seen, her mourning cries can be heard usually at night when someone is about to die. Those who claim to have seen her describe long hair which she runs a comb through.

The majority of place names in Ireland are anglicisations of their original (Gaeilge) names. The vast majority of the time, they are not direct translations into English. Place names in Ireland were anglicised phonetically, so more often than not, the anglicised version will sound similar to the original Irish name.

For example:
Gaeilge: Cill (meaning church)
Angliciation: Kil

Gaeilge: Baile (meaning town/townland)
Anglicisation: Ballin/Bally

Gaeilge: Cnoc (meaning hill)
Anglicisation: Knock

In Green-Wood Cemetery in NY, you will find the grave of Elizabeth Townsend Meagher, the wife of Thomas Francis Meagher. Although Meagher himself doesn’t have a grave, you will find beautiful transatlantic memorials to him like in Waterford City, Helena, Montana and right here at his wife’s graveside in Brooklyn.
