Manomet Conservation Sciences is thrilled to announce a new four-year grant from the Netherlands-based foundation DOB Ecology to advance coastal conservation across the Green Coast. This spans the countries of French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname, and is at the heart of the largest intact mangrove forest in Latin America.

Building on the Guianas Green Coast Conservation Plan developed over the past 18 months with more than 75 stakeholders, the work will prioritize climate and community resilience, and safeguarding biodiversity.

We are grateful for the partnership with DOB Ecology and the people, communities and governments of French Guiana, Guyana, and Suriname.

Discover how artisanal salt farms in the Gulf of Fonseca — a Pacific coastal ecosystem shared by Honduras, El Salvador, and Nicaragua — are being reimagined as both productive landscapes and vital habitat for migratory shorebirds.

Join our upcoming webinar, "From Salt Production To Shorebird Conservation: Building Climate-Resilient Coastal Landscapes In Honduras".

Julia Salazar Perla is a Salt and Shorebird Conservation Specialist at Manomet Conservation Sciences — and a third-generation artisanal salt producer from the Gulf of Fonseca. Her childhood on her family’s salt farms gave her a firsthand connection to the coastal communities she now serves.

With a background in Tourism, a master’s in project management, and a fellowship at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Julia brings a rare mix of lived experience and scientific expertise. Over six years, she has led field-based initiatives in Honduras, co-designing solutions that balance salt production with shorebird conservation.

🎉 40 years ago today, Delaware Bay became the first site in the Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network — and shorebird conservation was never the same.

On May 21, 1986, biologists, citizens, and political leaders came together to recognize this remarkable place: over 52,000 acres hosting more than 500,000 shorebirds each year, including the Threatened rufa Red Knot.

Watch Pablo Gigy Gregoret, Manomet's Saline Lakes Specialist, release Short-billed Dowitchers during the current banding campaign at Delaware Bay — a place that has been at the heart of WHSRN from the very beginning. Shorebird banding campaign by New Jersey Audubon.

WHSRN and Manomet have been intertwined from the start — historically, institutionally, and in the field. That connection continues today: WHSRN's Executive Office is housed within Manomet's Flyways Program.

🐦 Happy Anniversary to everyone who is part of this incredible network!

We have some exciting news to share with our Plymouth neighbors.

Manomet Conservation Sciences has signed an agreement with the Town of Plymouth to purchase and steward the historic Joseph A. Simes House.

The Simes House has meant many things to many people over the years, as a historic landmark, a gathering place, and a symbol of community investment in Plymouth. We do not take this moment lightly. We recognize the history, care, and conversation surrounding this property, and we are honored to become its next stewards.

Our plan for the Simes House is simple: to turn it into a welcoming, year-round space for the community. Think lectures, hands-on workshops, family nature activities, cultural events, and more, open to all.

This property represents decades of community investment and meaning for Plymouth residents. For nearly 60 years, Manomet Conservation Sciences has called Plymouth home. This is an exciting opportunity to deepen those roots and continue working alongside our neighbors.

We look forward to sharing more about what’s ahead. Read the full announcement here:

Dive season is officially open! 🤿
Our Fisheries team hit the water in Casco Bay this week for eelgrass monitoring surveys. Eelgrass beds are a critical coastal habitat, often called the "nursery of the sea," but they have significantly declined over the past two decades.
Manomet is working with partners to better understand the drivers of eelgrass health and develop large-scale restoration strategies in Maine, including researching the impact of green crabs on eelgrass beds and mapping historical eelgrass locations in Casco Bay with local harvesters.

Out in the field (and underwater): Senior Director of Fisheries Marissa McMahan, Fisheries Project Manager Jessie Batchelder, and Ben Gutzler from the Wells Reserve.

Last weekend, Manomet was chosen as the location for a bird photography workshop led by local photographer Ken Grille Photography, and it's easy to see why! As a true hotspot for birders, our site offered the perfect backdrop for his Level Two Photography Class, guided by our very own Lisa Schibley, North America Coordinator for the International Shorebird Survey.
With migration in full force, the group encountered an incredible total of 90 species over the course of the morning. Perfect weather, birds everywhere, and a wonderfully engaged group of photographers made for an unforgettable session.
We're grateful to Ken and his students for spending the morning with us, and to Lisa for sharing her expertise. These stunning images are a beautiful reminder of why Manomet is such a special place for birds.
