The Dementia Friendly PA team had a blast making more than 50 new Dementia Friends at Human Services Center Mon Valley’s KOOL Summer Camp this week! Campers in grades 1–5 learned about the brain and dementia, created their own brain hats, and explored ways we can all support people living with dementia.

When memory changes occur, correcting or challenging someone may unintentionally increase frustration or anxiety. Instead, focus on creating a sense of comfort and connection.

Validation doesn't mean agreeing with something that isn't true, it means acknowledging the person's feelings and meeting them where they are. Responding with patience, empathy, and reassurance can help reduce stress and preserve dignity for both the person living with dementia and their caregiver.

Sometimes, the goal isn't to correct the memory, it's to support the person.
