Community Human Services Addressing the immediate housing and food challenges impacting the Greater Pittsburgh Area.

In 1970, the fabric of Pittsburgh's South Oakland neighborhood was changing rapidly, reflecting the greater changes of the city brought about by the collapse of the steel industry. Community Human Services began when a small group of community members pulled together $60 per month to rent a storefront in their neighborhood to provide their neighbors with a space to build relationships and feel connected. In this small communal place, the group incubated community programs and quickly realized success in effectively addressing issues of crime and deterioration in their neighborhood. These efforts marked the beginning of Community Human Service’s commitment to enhancing people’s lives and cherishing the role that everyone plays in their communities. CHS was founded on the belief that all people should have access to the things they need to live as vibrant and integral members of their community, and continues this philosophy in our modern day settlement house model that spans across Allegheny County. CHS focuses on making sure each person’s basic needs are met and that they have genuine, positive opportunities to grow their personal, social and communal networks.

The CHS Oakland Food Pantry saw a 22% increase in individuals served over the past fiscal year. As the need grows, our commitment remains the same: ensuring every neighbor has access to nutritious food. 💜

On Friday, October 16th, The Big Share, presented by Dollar Bank, will bring our community together at The Art Room in the Strip District for an evening dedicated to that mission. With all proceeds exclusively benefiting the CHS Oakland Food Pantry, being part of The Big Share helps ensure our Pantry remains a resource our neighbors can count on when they need it most.

Join us in congratulating Don on his retirement from CHS after 33 years of service! 💜🧡

Don has touched well over 2,000 lives during his time with us. His legacy of care, kindness, and devotion to his community will live on through the people he has supported and the teams he has guided along the way.

Don held more than seven different positions across CHS, spending his last 13 years at the heart of our programming at Wood Street Commons. In every role, he brought a wealth of experience and a gift for making those around him feel valued and appreciated. We’ve been so fortunate to have him as a colleague and a friend.

While we’ll miss him dearly, we’re so excited for all that retirement holds for him. Congratulations, Don! Thank you for everything you’ve given to CHS. You deserve all the peace and happiness this next chapter brings!

This recognition is especially meaningful because it’s shaped by feedback from our own staff. For a team that gives so much of themselves to the people we serve, we strive to make CHS a workplace where they feel supported, connected to one another, and united by the mission behind their work.

Congratulations to our newest Shelter program graduate, Wendie! ⭐

Wendie is so excited to begin a new chapter in her own apartment, and we couldn’t be happier for her. Her case manager, Violet, shared how special it’s been to get to know Wendie during her time with us. Wendie’s kindness, resilience, and wonderful attitude have made such an impression, and it’s been a joy to see her reach this moment.

We’re so proud of her and excited for all that’s ahead—maybe even a cat to share her new home with sometime soon, too! 🐈
