Community Human Services

Community Human Services Addressing the immediate housing and food challenges impacting the Greater Pittsburgh Area.

In 1970, the fabric of Pittsburgh's South Oakland neighborhood was changing rapidly, reflecting the greater changes of the city brought about by the collapse of the steel industry. Community Human Services began when a small group of community members pulled together $60 per month to rent a storefront in their neighborhood to provide their neighbors with a space to build relationships and feel con

nected. In this small communal place, the group incubated community programs and quickly realized success in effectively addressing issues of crime and deterioration in their neighborhood. These efforts marked the beginning of Community Human Service’s commitment to enhancing people’s lives and cherishing the role that everyone plays in their communities. CHS was founded on the belief that all people should have access to the things they need to live as vibrant and integral members of their community, and continues this philosophy in our modern day settlement house model that spans across Allegheny County. CHS focuses on making sure each person’s basic needs are met and that they have genuine, positive opportunities to grow their personal, social and communal networks.

Introducing Closets to Community, a new summer clothing drive supporting participants in CHS shelter programs and the residents of Wood Street Commons.

This summer, we’ll be collecting new and gently used clothing items to help provide community members with clean, comfortable, and seasonally appropriate essentials.

While homelessness is often discussed most during the colder months, the need for support and everyday necessities continues year-round.

To learn more, view donation needs, or become a collection site, visit our website or contact us at [email protected].

We were so excited to welcome PwC to Wood Street Commons for a day of volunteering!

Their team spent the day reorganizing and optimizing staff and participant supply spaces, creating a more functional and accessible setup for both staff distributing items and participants accessing the resources they need. Their teamwork, enthusiasm, and willingness to jump in wherever needed made such a positive impact.

We truly appreciated having them with us and are grateful for their support of the Wood Street Commons community.

What does nutritious food mean to you?

That’s the question we asked our participants, and their answers served as a powerful reminder that access to fresh, nutritious groceries means so much more than simply filling a cart. It impacts health, stability, well-being, and peace of mind for thousands of individuals and families across our community.

Today is World Hunger Day, a reminder that far too many of our neighbors are still struggling to access the food and essentials they need to live healthy, stable lives. At CHS, we believe everyone deserves access to nutritious food and the resources needed to thrive, which is why we remain committed to supporting as many people as possible through our pantry services.

Last fiscal year alone, the CHS Oakland Food Pantry distributed 399,840 pounds of food to 5,926 individuals across Allegheny County, reflecting both the immense need that exists in our community and the importance of continuing this work every single day.

As we wrap up Mental Health Awareness Month, we want to recognize the organizations and individuals helping support mental health and wellness efforts across CHS.

Support looks different for everyone, and access to mental health resources can make a meaningful difference in people’s lives. Through partnerships, programming, and dedicated staff and specialists, participants across our programs are able to access services such as art therapy, massage therapy, pet therapy, and other wellness-centered activities that encourage healing, self-expression, connection, and care.

Thank you to Staunton Farm Foundation, The Pittsburgh Foundation, and the many therapists, specialists, and supporters helping make this work possible throughout our community.

We spent a wonderful afternoon at Point State Park for a spring picnic with some of our Wood Street Commons residents!

The picnic was a great opportunity for everyone to come together and spend quality time with one another out in the community. From co****le and giant Jenga to some seriously impressive unicycle skills, it was an awesome afternoon full of laughter, connection, and fun!

A huge thank you to YOCO Yoga Collective and Shelter Program Manager, Lindsey for hosting a clothing donation drive!

We’re so grateful for the incredible variety and amount of items donated. We can’t wait to begin distributing all of these items, which will go directly to the individuals and families we serve throughout our Shelters!

Stay tuned to next month to see how you can get involved in helping collect for our current needs!
