Thank you to the Mifflin County Commissioners for issuing a proclamation this morning, urging residents to give blood during the current blood crisis.

Blood cannot be manufactured or stockpiled. It is only available because of generous volunteer donors. Thank you for your support as we work together to rebuild the blood supply and ensure hospitals have the blood products needed for patients who rely on transfusions.

Luzerne County disaster volunteer Barbara Wallace has spent countless hours helping families recover after home fires, floods and other disasters. So when she heard about the blood crisis, she did what she has done for decades: rolled up her sleeve to help.

Barbara began donating blood years ago to support others, and her commitment grew even stronger after she received a blood transfusion in 1999.

"I give because it's going to help somebody," she said. "I can't always give money, but I can give blood."

Barbara encourages others to donate, noting that it's an easy way to make a difference. Giving blood doesn't take much time, she says, but it can have a lifesaving impact for someone in need.

As an O-negative donor, Barbara's blood can be transfused to patients of any blood type, making it especially needed and often in short supply.

You can help, too. Make an appointment to give blood today and help ensure patients have the lifesaving blood they need.

After retiring from a career in education, Dion Betts of Lancaster County found a new way to serve through the Red Cross.

Now, he's headed to Wisconsin on his first deployment to support communities recovering from devastating tornadoes. He'll be helping with logistics, making sure Red Cross shelters and other locations have the supplies needed to serve people impacted by the storms.

Dion is one of more than a dozen volunteers from the Greater Pennsylvania Region currently deployed to support disaster responses nationwide, including operations in Wisconsin and wildfire relief efforts in Washington and Oregon.

Thank you, Dion, and all our Red Cross volunteers for providing comfort and hope on someone's darkest day. ⛑️ ❤️

It is with a heavy heart that we share the recent passing of David Myers, a beloved longtime Red Cross volunteer in the Central Pennsylvania Chapter.

For 20 years and more than 3,000 volunteer hours, Dave served our mission with compassion, dedication and an unwavering commitment to helping others. This spring at our volunteer recognition event, he was presented with the Brown-Gabby Award, honoring the leadership, spirit and selflessness he brought to the American Red Cross every day.

Dave first joined the Red Cross after seeing firsthand how we help families after home fires. From that moment on, he dedicated himself to ensuring others received the same care and support. Whether responding to home fires, mentoring new volunteers or taking on countless roles across the organization, Dave was always willing to lend a hand.

He shared that one of the things he loved most about the Red Cross was the opportunity for everyone to find their own way to serve. Through his example, he inspired many others to do just that.

Dave's kindness, generosity and dedication touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed by our Red Cross family and the communities he served.

❤️ Our thoughts are with Dave's family, friends and fellow volunteers during this difficult time.

July 28 is National Waterpark Day! Whether you're relaxing in the lazy river or zipping down the slides, keep these tips in mind for a safe and fun day with your family.

🛟 Make sure lifeguards are on duty and follow their instructions.

ℹ️ Read the attraction signs and obey the rules, including age and height requirements.

👀 Parents — keep an eye on your children. If they can’t swim or are less than four feet tall, have them wear a properly fitted U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jacket.

🌞 Don't forget the sunscreen and stay hydrated throughout the day.

⛈️ When thunder roars, stay indoors. Watch the weather and get out of the water at the first sign of lightning or the rumble of thunder. Stay indoors and away from water for 30 minutes after the last lightning or thunder.
