For Carmen Carrasquel, community is right outside her front door.

The Harrisburg resident lives across the street from the Latino Hispanic American Community Center, where she helps older adults, supports families and connects neighbors with resources. When the opportunity arose to take a Red Cross CPR/AED course in Spanish, she knew it could help her better serve the community she cares about every day.

After completing the class, Carmen said she feels "more confident in being able to help people in a situation like that."

Through a American Red Cross Latino Engagement grant, more than two dozen community members recently completed Spanish-language CPR/AED training at LHACC, gaining lifesaving skills and the confidence to use them when it matters most.

Carmen says Harrisburg's Hispanic community is diverse, hardworking and supportive. "Sometimes when someone has a problem, people in the community come to support them," she said.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, we're proud to partner with organizations like LHACC to make preparedness and health education more accessible, helping build stronger, safer and more resilient communities.

Being prepared takes practice. 💪

Throughout the year, our local Red Cross disaster teams take part in no-notice drills to strengthen our ability to respond when emergencies happen. These exercises help us practice opening shelters and coordinating relief efforts after a major disaster, so we're ready to deliver help and hope when it's needed most.

Because readiness is built long before an emergency happens. ❤️

This Fire Prevention Week, make sure you're heating your home safely.

✅ Never leave a fireplace unattended
✅ Make sure embers are fully extinguished before bed or leaving home
✅ Never use an oven or range to heat your home
✅ Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything that can burn
✅ Plug space heaters directly into a wall outlet and turn them off when you leave the room

Home heating equipment is the second leading cause of home fires. Small steps can make a big difference.

❤️ When disasters strike across the country, Red Crossers from Pennsylvania go where they’re needed most.

Since July 1, 82 disaster responders from our region have deployed on nearly 100 assignments, supporting families impacted by western wildfires, Pacific typhoons and hurricanes and severe storms throughout the Midwest.

When Denny Soroka, 80, went into cardiac arrest at the New Kensington Giant Eagle, he needed a miracle — or people with the right training.

Arnold Police Chief and 25-year EMT Rob Haus and his wife, Crystal Haus, who is a cardiac nurse practitioner, happened to be in the store and ran over to help Denny when he collapsed. The pharmacy team called for help.

Chief Haus used CPR and a nearby AED to shock Denny, saving his life. After five days in the ICU and with a new heart defibrillator, Denny returned to family and his job as a local crossing guard.
