How can faith-based organizations effectively engage their communities in meaningful ways?

That’s the question the Pittsburgh Theological Seminary's Neighborhood Collaborative staff came to explore during their retreat at Light of Life this week.

Together, we discussed the power of collaboration, Christ-centered service, and what it looks like to create lasting impact in our city.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to share what we’ve learned and encouraged by a group so committed to putting theology into action. Thank you for the work you do to strengthen communities and serve your neighbors well.

🎡 Kicked off summer programming with a Summer Carnival for the women and children in our program

David came to our shelter on his birthday after running out of options and sleeping in the airport. That day, our staff celebrated him with a birthday treat and helped him take the first steps toward something new. 🎂

Now, David has graduated from our Shelter + Program and is in our High-Commitment Shelter, working hard, saving money, and building a future filled with stability and hope. 🎓👏

Stories like David’s remind us that when someone is met with compassion and support, a new beginning is possible.

We’re incredibly grateful and honored to receive the Nonprofit Excellence Award from the Pittsburgh North Regional Chamber!

This recognition is a reflection of so many people coming together to make life transformation possible — our staff, volunteers, community partners, and faithful supporters who continue to stand alongside our neighbors experiencing homelessness, addiction, and hardship.

Summer officially kicked off in the best way for the women and children in our long-term program. ☀️🎡

Today, our team came together to create a Summer Carnival filled with a cookout, cotton candy, popcorn, face painting, blow up activities, a 360 photo booth, and moments of joy for the families we serve.

Please keep these women and children in your prayers as we step into a summer filled with growth, community, healing, and hope. 💛

What if Sunday wasn’t just about going to church, but being the church? 💙

Cornerstone Ministries recently joined us for one of their Sunday Serve Days, choosing to put their faith into action. Their group helped clean around the shelter, serve lunch to our guests, and create a welcoming environment for neighbors experiencing homelessness.

When church groups step into spaces like ours with willing hands and open hearts, they help bring the love of Christ to people who need it most.

After putting in the hard work to rebuild her life and rediscover her worth, Dana graduated from our Women & Children's Long Term Program this spring!🎓💛

“Everybody here did really love me when I didn’t love myself. I can actually stand up here today and say that I actually love myself. I’m growing and becoming the woman I always should have been.”

The students at Oom Yung Doe -Pittsburgh Traditional Martial Arts school saw the homeless in our city and decided they needed to do something to help.

With the help of their families and instructors, they created a Kick-a-thon fundraiser.

We’re so inspired by this next generation and the example they’re setting for our community!

Perspective changes everything.

To some, this is just an underpass by the river.
To others, it’s where they sleep tonight.

Every week, our outreach team visits places like this to build trust, meet immediate needs, and remind people they haven’t been forgotten.

Homelessness is closer, more complicated, and more human than many people realize. The people living here are not stereotypes. They are fathers, mothers, veterans, sons, daughters, and neighbors who dream of a better life.

Awareness starts when we stop looking away.
