The American Library Association documented 487 attempts to censor books at libraries, schools, and universities in 2025. The reasons most commonly cited for censorship were false claims of illegal obscenity for minors; inclusion of LGBTQIA+ representation; covering topics of race, racism, social justice, and diversity; and presenting political or religious views with which the challengers disagreed.

Of the 4,235 unique titles that were challenged or banned in 2025, here are the top 11 most frequently targeted.

It's Banned Books Week, an opportunity to inform communities about this escalation in censorship while also highlighting the importance of the right to read and readers’ access to information. Together, we can protect the freedom to read during Banned Books Week and throughout the year.

"The 2026 Banned Books Week theme, β€˜Let Books Be,’ celebrates the joy of reading and, at the same time, motivates us to stand up for the right to read. We must let books be a window into ourselves and others, a door to new ideas and possibilities, and a path to full participation in our society."
- Barbara Stripling, chair of the Banned Books Week Coalition
