At Trail Pittsburgh, we create and maintain singletrack trails for runners, hikers, dog walkers, and mountain bikers.

Trail Pittsburgh's mission is to create, enhance, and preserve great trail experiences in Southwestern Pennsylvania. Welcome to Trail Pittsburgh, formerly known as Pittsburgh Trails Advocacy Group (PTAG). In the spring of 2015, PTAG rebranded as Trail Pittsburgh in order to become a chapter member of the International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA). This partnership allows us to expand our reach and take advantage of IMBA’s extensive support and expertise. Trail Pittsburgh will continue to focus on multi-use trails for trail runners, hikers, dog walkers and mountain bikers. If you’ve explored our region’s incredible singletrack trail networks, you’ve experienced and enjoyed our work. Trail Pittsburgh works closely with city, county, state and private landowners to ensure all trails are approved by the landowner or land manager. Trails are maintained and constructed to the International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) guidelines to be sustainable with minimal impact on the environment. Trail Pittsburgh strives to promote responsible trail use with the goal of fostering improved relations among landowners and all trail users.

Boyce Park trail work session. Join us as we tune up the trails with local youth NICA teams. Sunday, Sept. 27th. 9am-noon. Meet at the soccer fields. We will provide tools and gloves. Lunch following trail work.

This past weekend a hardworking team of 7 stewards spent 5 hours replacing a deteriorating bridge on Airport East Trail at Hillman State Park (Bavington). The collaboration of stewards from Hillman, Frick, and North Park installed one of our nicest bridges yet, which we hope will last for a long time.

The new bridge is made of locally sourced, rough sawn, pressure treated Hemlock lumber. The bridge deck is wider and sturdier - true 2"x8"x4ft wide boards - to support all users including horses. The bridge is longer than the old one to avoid the muddy stream bank and the stringers are 4"x8"x16 ft long weighing 175lbs each. Moving these materials to the site which is a 1/2 mile from the nearest access point was by far the most difficult part of this project.

The Frick Park Steward team thought we were done clearing fallen trees and large branches from the trails for a while but unfortunately for us and the forest this is a never ending task. So far in July we have removed 16 of them!

Unfortunately our Instagram is limited to 10 pictures so here are some before and after images of the more difficult trees. Not easy to see in the pictures is that most of the work is in moving the cut wood away from the trail; we moved many thousands of pounds of tree parts this month.

We had a great Steward Training day on Sunday in Frick Park. Thanks to everyone that came out to learn about maintaining trails and also helped make many drainage improvements! New volunteers and experienced stewards were able to work on four separate projects on Dinky Bridge and Rollercoaster trails.

Throughout May we worked on finishing repairs to Dinky Bridge trail that we started during our end of April steward training. Many sections of this trail suffered from erosion over the years, some of which was due to broken stormwater pipes in Regent Square that were recently repaired. So we're hopeful that the clay soil and rocks that we have added back to the trail surface will remain in place for a long time. The entrance from the street was also realigned to a more sustainable route that will be less prone to washing out and widening.
